IRC Channel: A Quick Guide
« on: December 29, 2013, 12:56:31 am »
You may have noticed that embedded IRC client at the bottom of every page on the forum.  Plunk in a nickname and press enter, and you'll be automatically connected to our chatroom.  Most of us regulars congregate there to share information and collaborate (or just talk) on a daily basis.  Have some questions about it?  Ask!  But to help forestall those questions, allow me to share what tips I can on it...

PLOTYNSTYNE's IRC Tips!

1.) If at all possible, I advise against using the embedded client on the forum.  I would suggest downloading your own client and using that.  Possible candidates include Ice Chat and mIRC (Ironfire has pointed out that it will eventually cost money) on computers, Colloquy and AndChat if you're on a mobile device.

I suggest this because there are many ways you can customize a downloaded client that just aren't available with the embedded one.  Also, any time you leave the page you have the IRC logged in on you will be disconnected.  This can be quite annoying if you're not a regular user of tabbed browsing.  A dedicated client to the IRC will free up some tab space in your browser at the least and give you a customized experience if you use it properly.

If you use your own client, you can connect to our room.  The server is irc.canternet.org, and our main channel is #BronyBoards.

2.) Some names are registered to certain users.  If you try to use a name but someone has already taken that name, it will randomize your name (pony_x, where x seems to be a random number).  You can change your name at any time by typing in "/nick <your chosen name>".  It can be up to 32 characters long and can only include letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens.  Any invalid nick will be rejected.

If you'd like to register your name, you can do so.  Type "/msg NickServ register <password> <email address>" to register your current nickname.  You will receive an email asking you to activate it, and from that time the name will only be available to you or someone you share your password with.  However, you will need to validate your nick any time you connect.  Many IRC clients can be set up to do this automatically.  To validate, type "/msg NickServ identify <password>".

3.) If you require the attention of an Admin urgently, the IRC is usually the quickest way to get a response. A few of us have audio alerts to get our attention. Ironfire, for example, will be alerted at the mention of "Ironfire" or, simply, "Iron". These alerts are for our and your benefit, please don't abuse them.

~Current Rooms~
As we grow, the need for more rooms might occur for varying reasons. For example, Ironfire has considered, on several occasions, to set up RP only rooms, some with a dice bot should the need arise. Below you'll find a list of rooms we currently use along with a brief description of what it's for.

#BronyBoards - The basic room for standard chat. The usual meeting place for us all. Keep this place spoiler free. There's a place for that talk.

#Spoilers - As the name suggests, this room is for any and all talk that could be considered spoilers. This is to ensure that no one hears spoilers when they don't want to. Don't want to hear spoilers? Then don't join this room. Simple as that.

#BB-Minecraft - A room with an actual topic. Minecraft talk here, whether it's for the server or just general minecraft stuff, head over here.

Should this list grow too long, it will likely be moved to it's own topic for ease of navigation.

It would seem the forum's embedded IRC client is on the fritz. This isn't the first time, so I figured I'd try and post here listing the required information to let your own personal clients connect should you wish to do so.

The server we connect through is these guys over here: Canternet, and our primary room is #BronyBoards

In the mean time, I'll see if I can fix the client. The thing hasn't been touched, so I may need to find a replacement client for it.

There. Turns out it's not our site specifically, but Canternet's own embed client. I couldn't connect to it on their own website. So, in light of that, I've now gotten a second client embed to use while theirs is down (I plan to switch back when/if it gets fixed). Seems to be working fine, but let me know if there's any issues. The only difference with this one is that it doesn't automatically have a random name generated, so you'll have to name yourself.
