The First Step
« on: October 18, 2014, 05:25:07 pm »
Jazz glances around at the apparently abandoned buildings surrounding Tech Tock as she approaches the workshop. The white mare, unaware of the rumors regarding the little inventor's home, finds it strange that all of these seemingly perfectly good houses are empty. Maybe she'll ask Haywire about it when she gets there. She trots up to the door and pauses for a moment, wondering if she should knock. Does this place count as a shop? She doesn't see a sign anywhere... Well, it doesn't hurt just to knock. As she reaches up to rap on the door, the little box next to it suddenly bursts open with a *pop*, spraying confetti and silly string everywhere while a sign that read "Welcome to Tech Tock!!!" deployed from the top, alongside a pair of lit sparklers. Jazz jumps slightly at the sudden noise, then giggle when she sees the sign. Guess that answers that question. Not seeing much point in knocking now, Jazz opens the door and steps inside. "Hello?" She calls, looking around at the heaps of machinery scattered throughout the entire room.

As much as she wanted to steer clear of the machines to avoid any potential scares, Star knew she had to help Haywire. She had to both help him achieve his dream and repay him for letting her stay with him in his workshop. It was for this reason she was hesitantly picking through the various piles around the workshop, doing her best to sort through it and organize some of the clutter around the place. As she did so, the welcoming machine at the entrance of the workshop sounded off, causing Star to perk her ears and look towards the front door, glad for the distraction and for somepony new to talk to.

"Hi there!" Star called cheerily to the pony entering the shop as she trotted over to meet her. "Welcome to Tech Tock, where the only limit to creation is your imagination!" She paused for a moment, mind wandering back to the other day when Clarity had entered the shop, and Star had told Haywire that she wasn't sure he could make a certain invention without magic... She'd need to apologize to him for that, for not believing in that motto. Mentally shaking herself back to the situation at hand, she smiled brightly to Jazz and continued. "Thanks for paying us a visit... How can we help you today, miss?"

While there were still the occasional growls and grumbles whenever she did something they considered annoying, since Clarity's visit the machines of Tech Tock hadn't tried to pull off any further pranks on Star. They hadn't apologized, of course, and they often still attempted to raise tension every once in a bit, but no full pranks had been pulled. Except for the usual ones amongst each other. And Bubo had at some point found himself buried inside of a cream pie, further adding to the strange mystery that was how the machines managed to keep using edible items as ammunition for their hijinks when Hay himself couldn't afford much food for the shop.

Anywho, the new pony entering the shop caused a small murmur to spread among the machines as Star greeted her. What they were up to, who could tell, but for now at least they seemed to be remaining relatively quiet. Whether or not this was a good thing, who knows.

Further back into the shop there was what looked like the a dome styled... thingie... Kind of shaped like a turtle shell actually, and from inside there came the occasional loud clangs, bangs and sounds of things scrapping or clattering that Star had most likely had to put up with for a little while now. On top of the dome was a hatch, and soon after Star had spoken the shops motto it swung open to release a large poof of smoke that billowed upwards and left behind a plenty thick trail of smoke that slowly began to thin out. A cuple seconds later, a pair of sooty but green hooves were swung out to grasp the edge of the opening and help Hay poke his head out to excitedly grin around the wrench in his mouth as he looked to see who had come to visit.

"Hi, Yazz!" He called, flailing a hoof in an enthusiastic wave hello as he mispronounced the mare's name, him then spitting out the wrench he held in his teeth and letting it clatter back into the small collection of tools on the floor nearby. He then... well... he didn't necessarily "climb" out of his shell machine thing so much as he did pull himself out and then let himself roll down it, yet he still managed to land on his hooves at the bottom and start trotting over towards Yazz with a spring in his step.

"Haven't seen you in a while. How have you been? Oh," he turned to Star to do a quick introduction between the mares, "Star, this is Yazz. She's Clarity's mom. I met her a little bit ago when I helped out with a party for them. Yazz, this is Star, my new assistant. What can we do for you?" They'd only met once before, but with how Hay sounded when speaking one would think that they were long tome friends. Then again, he sounded like that with everypony, so pretty normal for him.

Bubo, arriving on the scene carrying a pretty heavy looking bag of extra parts and tools out from a back corner of the room, stressed his wings on over to the turtle shell device whatchamajiggy before dropping his cargo onto the growing pile of useful stuff and things growing up next to it, him noticing the new arrival and taking flight in order to fly over and land on his usual spot atop Haywire's head, him then titling his own noggin in curiosity at the newcomer.

"And this is Bubo. Bubo, this is Yazz!" Bubo raised a wing as he gave two cheery chirps to sound a small hello to the new mare.

Jazz gives Star a friendly smile as the other mare walks over to greet her, and then a slight giggle at the shop's apparent motto. Hopefully they live up to it, what she had in mind probably isn't going to be easy. "Hi there." She greets, stopping for a moment to gather her thoughts on what she wants. "I was-" She starts to say, only to be interrupted by the hatch on the turtle dome thingy popping open in a rush of smoke, followed by Haywire poking his head out. She waves back at the messy green stallion, chuckling at the mispronunciation of her name. "Hi!" She calls out as the inventor tumbles down the side of the machine. "I've been good, how are you doing?" She answers as Haywire trots over. She holds out a hoof to Star when Hay introduces her, a cheerful grin on her face. "Nice to meet you Star. And it's actually Jazz." She doesn't really mind Haywire getting her name wrong, it's kind of amusing actually, but she figures she might as well be introduced properly. Her attention is drawn back to the turtle machine at the sound of something falling, and her eyebrows rise at the mechanical bird flying it's way toward them. The white unicorn "oooooh."s quietly under her breath as she watches Bubo come down to land on Hay's head. If he could do something like that than surely he could make what she wants, right? "Hi Bubo!" She says, a wide grin on her face. She turns her attention back to Haywire and Star, her smile fading somewhat. "Well." She starts, looking between the two ponies. "Around the time the dance was Clarity told me about when she visited, and mentioned Bubo." She says, gesturing to the little robot. "Hearing about that kinda got me thinking... About twenty years ago my wife lost most of her hind legs. And I was wondering if... you'd be able to make something to help her."

"Looks like ponies are talking about you, Bubo," Hay playfully pointed out to Bubo, the bird snuggling up on top of his head and looking a touch shy at the thought as haywire listened to Jazz explain why she was visiting, her earlier correction of his mispronunciation of her name not being that big a surprise to him. He had been mostly deaf when he met her after all.

"Oh, did you have anything in mind?" He asked when she was finished before then allowing his mind to start running rampant with most likely bad ideas for what they could do, "Do you want me to try and make a special super chair? I could try to build one that can go between land and sea on the fly. Oh! Oh! Fly! Is she a pegasus already? If not, then maybe I can figure out how to build wings for a pony! That would so so cool! It didn't work out so great the last few times I tried, but who knows for this time! Star!" He turned an excited grin to his assistant, eyes positively gleaming behind his goggles, "I may need to study and take some measurements of your wings for science! I-if you don't mind, that is... hehe... I would go with what I know of bird wings, but pony wings seem a lot different."

Upon hearing noise behind her, Star glanced back over her shoulder to greet the source of the noise, knowing it to be Haywire. She watched him approach before looking back to Jazz, smiling and waving first in greeting when the mare was introduced, followed by her blinking when she mentioned she was Clarity's mother. Star wondered briefly if she was here to chew the both of them out for what had happened the other day... though she seemed like she wasn't irritated about anything... "It's nice to meet you too, miss Jazz," Star responded politely while she still had a moment and it was still fresh on her mind, then listened as Jazz told them that her wife had lost her hind legs and that she'd come looking for a replacement.

A look of sympathy crossed Star's face, knowing that it must have been difficult for them, but she honored Jazz for sticking by her wife's side through it all. It must've taken a lot of love to get through that, not to mention last twenty years. She then glanced over to Hay as he started talking about wings and trying to get measurements of her wings for 'science'. She giggled and responded with, "You can still certainly do that," as she nuzzled his shoulder before continuing, "But I don't think that's what miss Jazz had in mind. It sounds like she's looking for something to help her wife walk again. I could certainly think you'd be able to make some kind of hydraulic, or gear-operated system, or some mixture of the two... Just as long as it didn't try to get a mind of its own." Those words were left as a subtle warning, relating to the other machines behind her in the shop, as she looked back to Jazz. "The best place for us to start would be to ask if you had anything in mind."

Jazz grins at Haywire's suggestion of a super chair. It's not what she has in mind, but the mental image of Thyme in a super chair is amusing nonetheless. At his next question she shakes her head. "No, she's a unicorn." She says, looking over at Star when Hay turns to talk to her. While she doesn't pay much mind to the sudden quaver in Haywire's voice, she does notice his blush and giggle when the mare nuzzles him. Well, that was cute. Jazz wonders if they're a couple. Though... if they are it's unusual for him to respond like that. It made it look more like he has a crush. She giggles softly. She knows it's not really any of her business, but they would be so cute together... Putting that aside for the moment, she nods at Star's guess that amphibious super chairs and mechanical wings weren't what she'd had in mind. "At the dance you mentioned you were working on an..." She pauses to think for a moment. "Exoskeleton, I think you called it? It got me thinking that that's kind of like a mechanical limb. And then I heard about Bubo from Clarity. That got me pretty excited because if you can make a whole bird, surely you can do just a couple limbs right?" She gives the trio a hopeful smile. "And that's what I had in mind, replacement limbs. Do you think you can do that?"

Hay pauses to think, hoof tapping his chin as his tongue stuck out of the side of his mouth a bit in concentration as he thought back to the party where he'd met Jazz and tried to recall the deafened conversation to the best of his ability.

Exoskeleton... Exoskeleton... Ah!

"Oh! I remember now! It's my invention where it can help ponies carry more weight," He explained more to Star than Jazz as this was the first time it had ever been mentioned in front of the pegasus, "it wraps around the body and transfers the weight of whatever somepony has on their backs through the framing instead of just the body and takes some of the load off. It can't work as legs on their own though... But maybe I could take the design and add in some nice gears and stuff like you said.

"I'll need to look at them again, however!" Hay explained, voice growing excited at the idea of building something fancy and new from something that had, like with most of his inventions, not seen the light of day in some time "And that means we'll have to find it! Star! Could you please check over in those piles by the prototype portable sun generator? You know, the one by the table? I think I last left my exoskeleton either over there, underneath a bike-airship hybrid that has a sticky note stuck onto it saying 'To be continued', or... It's in here!" At that Haywire literally dove into a pile of scrap and discarded half built inventions to his right, him somehow managing to treat the collection of hard materials as if it were water like an overly wealthy duck diving into a pool of gold coins.

He didn't surface.

This was relatively normal around here.

Invention that could help ponies carry more weight... That certainly sounded like it had some very practical uses. She wondered briefly why he'd never finished a project like that, but that train of thought dissipated when he mentioned having to find it, followed by asking her to look in a certain spot. "Yeah. I can do that," she started to say, only to pause when he dove into a nearby pile of stuff. She stared for a moment, still baffled as to how he could do that without hurting him self or being completely stopped by the hard surface, before shaking her head and doing her best to dismiss it before she gave herself a headache.

She walked over to the place Haywire had asked her to search, the place in question needing to take her a couple minutes longer than normal because she had to regain her bearings a couple times to find the 'portable sun generator'. When she did finally get over there, it didn't take too much searching before she did indeed find what could be described as the exoskeleton. When she reached for it however, it darted out from underneath her hoof. She blinked in surprise and stared at it for a moment in bewilderment, then moved over to it to try to pick it up.

Once she reached it again, the exoskeleton darted away from her once more--this time though, she caught a glimpse of why: some sort of... small, weird, peanut-shaped thing was dragging it away from her for some reason. She pouted for a moment, then tried to snatch it quickly after closing some of the distance, only to be unsuccessful. "Hay, I found it over here--but something doesn't want me to have it and keeps pulling it away from me." She kept a close eye on it as she called out to him, following it wherever it went if it decided to try and run and hide.

Jazz briefly glances over in the direction Haywire had indicated at his mention of a "portable sun generator". While she has no idea which of the devices over there it could be, it sounds pretty interesting. Maybe she'll ask about it a bit later. She looks back at Haywire in time to see him dive straight into a pile of gadgets and managing to go right through it like he'd jumped into a pool. The white unicorn giggles softly. Seems like a useful talent to have in a place like this. As Star moves off to begin her own search, Jazz remains where she is, unsure if she should try to help out. Well... They probably know the place well enough, so she turns to just looking around at the gizmos and gadgets littering the workshop. She has no idea what most of them could be for, though a couple she might be able to take a guess at. There was some kind of giant dough mixer machine past the pile Haywire had jumped into, though it has a few strange odds and ends sticking off of it in places. A little to her right was what looks like an ordinary potted plant, nestled among the doodads piled on a table, and she was almost sure it wasn't there when she'd arrived. Before she can investigate and possibly reveal it as a well disguised sprinkler or perhaps a floral invader from another dimension, Star speaks up about having found the exoskeleton, and that something was trying to keep it away from her. Jazz trots over toward the other mare, trying to spot whatever it is. She can definitely see something shifting around underneath and around the machines, though she has difficulty making out what it is. "Is there anything I can do to help?" She asks, keeping her eye on the moving object and coming to a stop near Star.

Back at the pile where Hay had disappeared into moments before, his little green head poked itself out, displacing some of the junk as he blinked in the direction that Star had called, him tilting his head a bit before retreating back into the pile. The pile shook slightly and the sound of things being moved around inside was audible as Hay again failed to surface from it, though the reason why became obvious when he reappeared not in that pile but instead the one nearest the mares... somehow...

Poking his head back out near them, he gave the suspected invention a visual once over before grinning, "Yup! That looks like the one alright!" Hay cheerfully confirmed, the peanut shaped gadget device thingie scurrying about in search of a way to escape and passing close enough to him for the stallion to chance a quick pounce, though his prefacing it with a shouted "I got it!" allowed the device enough warning to dart away in time to avoid capture.

"Cut off it's escape routes and go for it whenever it's close enough, please," Hay instructed at Jazz's offer of help, instead of chasing after, again buried himself in his scrap heap of parts and half finished toys, this time being missing for less time however as he almost immediately popped back out, an alarm clock this time managing to remain balanced on his head while he was visible. "Thanks for finding it!" he said to Star just as the alarm clock, evidently irritated, started to ring, it remaining annoying until Hay again dug into his cover and left it behind.

"I got it!" he again shouted from another spot, popping out from somewhere he shouldn't have logically been able to reach from where he was last seen. Just as before, giving himself away before actually getting it worked against him as the peanut escaped once more, this repeating a couple more times until Hay seemed to try a new strategy.

The peanut machine drivy divey whatchamajiggy paused for a break, inevitably beside yet another one of Hay's sources of parts. This time however, Hay slowly raised his head up enough for his goggled eyes to lock onto his target, him then moving forward like a shark in water as he drew a little closer and readied to catch the slippery little machine.

Closer... Closeeeeer... Just about... wait for iiiiiit-

"I got it!" Hay again shouted, popping up out of his hiding spot with a big grin as bits and pieces of scrap flew this way and that, him then jumpong out of his place to try and pounce onto the machine that again was warned well in advance and succeeded in getting away eve if Hay failed to notice this right away. He landed, giggled, then slowly lifted his hooves only to find absolutely nothing underneath them aside form the floor of the workshop, him blinking in confusion while the peanut shaped escape artist of a machine fled towards the mares.

"Cut off its escape routes" sounded easy enough to Star, which was exactly what she relayed to Jazz in response to her question. "It's just a shame a day can't go by without cooperation," she added with a sigh and a shake of her head before blocking off one of the few paths available through all the clutter she'd yet to make headway with. There was just so much working against her, it felt like, and she had no idea how to solve her problem. Yet she had to, because she felt like she owed it to Hay...

Wearing a light frown as those thoughts lingered on the edges of her mind, she stood watch in front of her chosen pathway, ears perked at attention as she waited for something to happen. She could hear Hay shout that he got it, making her relax just as bit as she waited for him to come back into sight--confusion overtook her as he repeated the statement a few moments later, as if he'd not quite succeeded. Shortly following the barely audible 'thud' of his failed second attempt at capturing the little peanut thing, Star caught movement of the machine in question as it rounded one of the piles of scrap and scurried into her field of vision.

Strangely enough, it was headed straight for her. Not bothering to second-guess this, Starr narrowed her eyes a bit and lowered her body into a crouch like a cat readying a pounce, she waited for it to scurry closer and closer... before finally doing just what she looked like she was going to, and leapt for the machine, hoping to finish the silly chase once and for all.

Of course, it wasn't going to be that easy. As she pounced, the little machine turned at the last moment and darted out from underneath her, leaving her no room to adjust herself with her wings. Instead of meeting the machine, she met the floor instead--and after a moment of gathering herself she huffed and raised her head to look around, only to see that it had gone Jazz's direction instead, even if it might not have known yet.

Jazz keeps her eye on the the thing moving beneath the piles of gizmos as best she can, though it's a bit hard to track it's movements in places. Still, she positions herself in a spot that seems like it will have to pass if it manages to avoid both Haywire and Star. Unless it can somehow pass through the large rectangular something-or-other a little to her side. She keeps focused on the movement as Haywire pops back out of the pile for just a moment before retreating, and then, somehow, appearing in an entirely different pile. Despite the little green stallion's disregard for the general rules of reality, Jazz remains focused on peanut-beetle thing scurrying around with the exoskeleton. She can't help but giggle a little at Haywire's repeated attempts to capture the device. She wonders if this kind of thing happens often around here. Jazz readies herself to lunge for the little machine as it avoids Haywire's grasp one more time, though it heads for Star rather than her. Getting prepared turns out to have been a good idea though, as the peanut swerves away from the pegasus' pounce and heads right toward Jazz. The white unicorn is not as spry as she used to be, and when the thing darts towards her she's a little too slow to dive for it, barely missing as it scuttles away toward another pile of gadgets, clearly attempting to get back out of view. Jazz manages to get her hooves under herself again and takes off after the delinquent robot, knocking a few of the other machines aside in her effort to catch it. She manages to catch up just as it's about to disappear into the pile, and with no other options, dives for it again. Her hooves are mere inches away when she careers into the small mountain of machinery, and the whole thing comes tumbling down around her and the fleeing machine. For a few moments the mechanical odds and ends shift about, settling down into their new shape. Then a pair of hooves bursts upwards out of the top, the little robot grasped between them flailing it's legs and whirring it's wheels in a vain attempt to escape. "I got it!" Jazz yells, her head popping out of the pile as well and the mare grinning widely. Unfortunately, though she wasn't hurt by the cascade of doodads, she's not as adept at moving through them as Haywire is, and it takes her a good thirty seconds to extract herself, during which time she very nearly loses her grip on the wayward robot. She does manage to regain her grip just in time and pulls herself fully out of the pile. She gives a giggle and faces the other two. "Right, so now what do we need to do?"

After a few more seconds of being unable to grasp that his flawless plan had failed him, Haywire was pulled out of it when he heard somepony hit the ground, an assumption that it had something to do with his escaped quarry leading him to trot off to investigate. Seeing Star on the ground after her pounce he came closer to check and see if she was both okay and if she had succeeded. Seeing no peanut shaped machine near her however answered the latter right away.

"Are you o-" he was in the middle of asking before being interrupted by the cacophony of noise that was the collapse of the everything around Jazz. It wasn't difficult to spot the spectacle, Haywire right away taking off in a gallop towards the possible disaster waiting for him, him stopping at the edge of it all with a slight sliding of his hooves. For a few moments he looked worried over the possibility of Jazz having gotten hurt, not many ponies other than he being capable of navigating metal and the like with little trouble, but his worries were soon alleviated when Jazz' hooves triumphantly burst out from the pile clutching the machine they had all been chasing. Hay sat down and gave the mare a short round of applause at the victory.

"Good work everypony!" the inventor praised, giving Star another look and a quick scan of his eyes to check for any boo boos on her part, though finding it difficult to search her in such a way for long without his cheeks heating up a little bit, "Are you alright though, Jazz? That looked like a bump if ever I've seen one." Offering a hoof to assist her escape of the pile she was in should she wish to accept, Haywire gave her a grin at the question.

Seeing that she was holding the runaway peanut wheely deal and not the exoskeleton it had made off with, Haywire turned his attention back to the pile and brushed some of the debris away before sticking his head into it and grabbing hold of something with his teeth.

"Now!" Hay spoke through his teeth as he pulled out the exoskeleton from beneath the garbage/scrap/potentially priceless gadgets depending on your view, him walking backwards until the invention was in the middle of the three ponies little triangle while Bubo, having been lost in scrap when Haywire had dove into the first pile, reappeared to land on his head with a rather flat look, "I need to figure out how to add some more muscle to this design to act as actual legs. But first I need some general questions asked. Firstly, how tall is your wife? Taller or shorter than Star? Secondly, do you have any pictures of her before she lost her legs that I could use as a reference? I can get started by basing the early build off of your legs, Star, if you don't mind of course, then tweek the design either after I have a picture or when we can get Jazz' wife in for a test of the prototype.

"We're there any details you wanted me to know about or take into consideration during the development?" He asked Jazz as he picked up his exoskeleton and started giving it a good look to refresh his memory of the smaller details, "anything at all? Maybe add in a cup holder? Some bouncy hooves for extra jumping power? Oh! Oh! Water skis and propellers!" Haywire, being Haywire, of course never made any mention of needing to be paid for his work, his eager eyes and gleeful smile showing his satisfaction with merely helping somepony and building something new. Bubo, recognizing his forgetfulness, knew where we're that was going, the metal bird trying to think of a way to raise the question with his limitations in communicating with ponies other than his creator.

Star rose from her hooves after the robot zips past Jazz, worried that they'd have to continue going on a wild chase for the little troublemaker. Just as she started to trot over to the other mare in an attempt to help her up though, Jazz got back onto her own hooves and chased after it. Not quite following with the same enthusiasm, Star continued to trot along at the same pace she had been, a little aggravated that they were actually having to do this. Though when she heard another loud crash and a cacophony of one more pile of scrap tumbling down, her pace picked up a little bit, worried that Jazz might have gotten herself injured.

She did breath a sigh of relief when Jazz emerged unscathed from the freshly-made pile--the mare despairing briefly that it was just even more clutter that was blocking contributing to the messiness of the shop, and that its new status was just going to make clean-up harder--then perked her ears to give Hay attention when he spoke and told them both what they were to do next. Not really having anything to add to the detailing of his plans, she only nodded when he mentioned using Star as a reference and responded with, "Sure, I'm up for that, Hay. I'd be glad to help."

He then began asking about any other details Jazz might have wanted to share, or take into consideration, which brought up the thought of payment to Star. It would probably be best to be up front about its expensiveness before things really got under way. "That aside," she spoke up after Hay began listing off various additions the legs could come with. "Something like this will probably be very expensive, miss Jazz. Not only up front, but down the road--all the repairs something like this might take in the future. I hate to put a price on something that seems so... priceless, but, well... We have to eat too, I hope you understand. I just wanted to mention that now so we can move forward without any complication. Were you hoping to have it done on any kind of budget?"
