Ponyville / This Dish is Killer
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:24:47 pm »
Been a bit since Darrus had taken the time to just take a leisurely stroll down the streets of Ponyville. His usual hang out (The Guiding Light) was temporarily closed for some reason or another, AJ was off to visit some family, and his chores were done on the farm, so he'd been left with few options aside from just explore the town and see what he could get up to. Not the worst idea, he'd come to realize, what with how the place tended to have something nuts happen more regularly than the sunrise a short walk could be a gosh dang full blown adventure. Nothing so far though, his passing by the various little homes and shops of the town he'd become surprisingly comfortable with amounting little more than the occasional greeting from passers-by.

It still felt weird for Darrus to actually know more than a couple of people in a town even of this small a size considering how rarely he'd ever stuck around to any particular place for more than a short spell. But stuck he had, and not be miserable because of it he also somehow had. Perhaps cause of adventure finding him here instead of him finding adventure, maybe was just a pleasant place to be, or mehbe something a bit more personal and private, but whatever the reason he didn't see himself leaving any time soon.

Maybe.

A small amateur band played around with strings and drums nearby as he turned a corner and passed a flower shop, the smell and sounds almost inspiring one to music themselves. Actually, you know what? Screw it. He hadn't sung in a while - weeks even! - and he was just in the right mood to do so now. The sun was shining, his cloak was keeping him cool as was the summer breeze that was slowly dropping into a fall one, and the band was already playing. Bobbing his head, Darrus took in a breath...

"I-"

Then the wall of the diner nearby exploded, showering him with some wooden shrapnel and causing him to lift a wing to shield his face from the downpour. Once the worst was past he allowed himself a peek at what was going on, the nearby residents of the town flipping out, a few running in literal small circles and screaming while a couple of others simply reared back and flailed their front hooves out of confused panic, eyes shut tightly so as not to even witness what was going on. Another was repeatedly bucking the wall of the building in some attempt at defending themselves from what was happening, and another was still enjoying their meal at one of the tables outside the shop, the possibility of him being deaf lending credence to his lack of a response to everything around him.

So... more or less the usual response to chaos around here.

"Mmmmmmkay," Darrus mumbled to himself, taking off in a light hover to gain a better view from above, the other ponies scurrying about beneath him as he tried to peer into the now gaping hole in the side of the building, "so the place blows up, the goobers go to code red and the cause is..."

Bread and... Cheese? A lot of cheese... and vegetables? Spilling out. Looked like... whats it called... Did someone just spill something or- oh, no wait! It was... moving? Yeah it definitely was moving. Or rather it was standing up. The bread and cheese was standing up. And boy did it stand! Almost as tall as the building itself! And it had a face made from vegetables.

"RAWWWWWWWWR!!!"

And it was roaring.

Awesome.

"Huegh?" Darrus sounded with a confused contortion of his features, him tilting his head as if that would help him understand what he was loo- Calzone! That's what the thing was! It was a calzone. Thing. A standing calzone thing that was roaring- so now we're back to being confused.

The creature - which smelled absolutely divine by the way - leaned it's cheesy head lower so as to direct another guttural roar towards the fleeing, circling, bucking and flailing ponies below, a few being blown away by the power behind such a vocalization while a couple of others just got splattered with some tomato sauce.

Darrus was certain there was a story here. He had no idea where to begin with his guessing. He also was only now just realizing how hungry he was, the calzone creature smashing away at the rest of the building around him as Darrus thought back to the few apples he'd had before heading out and- flying cheese!

A quick dip in the air to avoid the incoming wad of mozzarella being flung his way, it sailing past and splatting onto the roof of the coffee shop behind him. Darrus gave the creature a glare, though it went mostly unnoticed since it had returned itself to crushing all that pesky real estate keeping it from terrorizing the town proper.

"So," the pegasus said under his breath, "where to start..."

Tales of Old / Las Pegasi
« on: November 03, 2014, 12:03:46 pm »
It was always fun coming here. Las Pegasus always had a kind of risky feel to it that got Darrus excited every time he walked down the heavily lit streets and took part in the many games available that threatened to leave him even poorer than he usually was, but that was always part of the fun. Darrus was the kind of pony who knew that you never played to win when you gambled here, but instead just payed to play the games, the fun being in howfar you can get on your money before being sent home. It was to be expected that you will be leaving with a lighter bit pouch when you passed that sign on the road that thanked you for your visit as you left either angry or laughing. Darrus was always the latter.

Then again Darrus also did tend to try and maximize his chances... Being a wandering stallion with little money to his name, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that he'd learned a few tricks here and there to improve his net worth when given the opportunity to win some money. He did carry a dagger for self defense for a reason after all, especially in a town like this. Thankfully he hadn't needed to flip it around any tonight as he had done something different for once, sticking to more fancy casinos and dives where you would be more likely to find an oil baron or millionaire on their off days throwing money away just because they could. And, wouldn't ya know it, his luck had even been pretty good the last couple nights, a few poker games going his way while a blackjack table here and a lucky slot machine there had done wonders in weighing down his money pouch.

In fact, he'd been so... lucky lately that the management of the establishment he'd been growing most fond of had... Um... "encouraged" him to take a "break" at one of the local nightclubs they also happened to own. Had some fancy name, "La Flamme en Bouteille" or something, Darrus didn't know. All he had done was follow the simple directions needed to reach it as he felt it would be interesting to check out, the name of the place he'd found sounding close enough to match what he was looking for.

It took a few minutes to convince the buys out front to let him in - a small note needing to be handed off, some managers needing to be spoken to and so on - but he was able to get in eventually, Darrus standing out like a sore thumb amongst the other more classy ponies having their fancy drinks and going about their fun.

Welp! First things first!

Darrus headed for the bar, him taking up a stool and smiling at the bartender who seemed surprised to see somepony like him taking up one of the seats.

"Uh... Can I help you?" the bartender asked, her sounding confused and looking like she was trying to decide if she should call somepony from security to check this stallion out. Surely he'd snuck in... but how...

"Cider, if you would please," Darrus replied, seeming annoyingly casual about it as he found the confusion amusing, "Hard cider, whatever you've got, you'll find I have a tab for the night that somepony else will be handling," he informed with a wink, the bartender not looking convinced as she awkwardly paused then decided just to go with it for the moment. As Darrus waited for the deliberately slow bartender to do as he'd asked, he spun his stool around to look over the other ponies in the nightclub, checking out what their idea of fun was as he wondered what exactly those giving him odd looks were thinking.

Ponyville / Time at the Tavern
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:10:46 pm »
With his mind now set on overhearing some information and maybe getting a cheap drink, though his funds and previous encounter with the mare who'd led him here made the latter seem... unlikely... Darrus stepped up to the front doors of the tavern, him taking note of its name, The Guiding Light, and burning its location into his mind so as to always remember where it was. Or try to at least.

Entering with style, in his own imagination at least, Darrus flourished his way through the doors, walking tall as if owning the place and strutting over to, of course, the bar first where he took up one of the stools then spun around so as to lean back against the counter and gaze out over the other patrons, ears now listening for anything interesting about anything as he waited for something. What? Who could ever know....?

Sweet Apple Acres / Derivation
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:36:28 am »
A quick pop into the tavern to listen in on a couple of ponies drunkenly point out how they both felt that the other had somehow copied how they were dressed, even though they were both naked, had led Darrus to believing that he had possibly chosen a bad time when it came to looking for leads on available and paying work. Abandoning that location for now, the pegasus decided to hit up the "best place to start" as according to the mare who'd helped him find his way around, him trotting back outside then taking back off into the sky... only to realize that wasn't the best method of travel with his wings still aching, the easy to ignore pain still serving as a clear enough warning that he shouldn't push himself too far... again. Returning to having his hooves on the ground, the stallion was forced to go by the simple directions given to him and shortly lived flights upwards to try and catch a glimpse of any apple trees in the distance to guide himself towards the farm he searched for.

Even without the constant aid of his wings, it wasn't too difficult to find his way, the apple trees he was scanning for being quite plenty and managing to draw him close enough to be within the farms land. However, in a slightly wily move on his part possibly driven by hunger, Darrus had, instead of following the road, wandered into the trees him happily letting his eyes be just as adventurous as they skipped their focus from apple to apple, his mind starting to become more and more interested in the fruit as his belly reminded him of how he'd only had grass to eat the last few days. If the cider he was hoping to try was as good as he'd heard, then the apples used to make it should be pretty gosh darn tasty too... Only now lowering his gaze from the hanging natural sweets, Darrus noticed the trees now were starting to have crates and other containers set around the base of their trunks, the apples of those trees having been picked clean then gathered so as to transport them. Well, seemed this was the part of the orchard being harvested at this time, which meant he'd probably bump into somepony eventually... And all those apples just sitting there at the moment... Hmm...

Darrus began to hear a small part of his mind akin to a devil sitting on his shoulder start to tempt him with the idea of sneaking just one of the smaller itty bitty apples away to try for himself, both to satiate his new hunger and to test to see if the advertised cider was indeed as promising as he'd heard. But with every devil there came an angel to match, another part of him just urging him to simply Friggin wait until after he knew if he'd be given work by the fruits owners, then just ask on a lunch break or something to have a couple apples or maybe pick one off of the far trees if he was sent away... Either way, there was no harm in at least enjoying the smell of them, right? Trotting closer to one of the gloriously full crates simply stuffed with apples, Darrus took a long sniff, mouth beginning to water due to the close proximity of so many red delicious... Darrus was starting to stare now, his cautionary glances around to see if anypony was nearby ceasing as he started to have silly thoughts such as "just one bite. One bite, then they can cut around it and it will still be perfectly good, right?"

Ponyville / Stranger in Town
« on: December 30, 2013, 07:17:02 pm »
Wings were a bit achy today, not all that surprising given the... what was it now... few days at least of constant travelling. Fly, sleep, fly, graze, fly, Darrus' well practiced routine of moving and resting usually prevented any kind of serious strain on his wings as years of hopping from place to place had taught him how to get the most out of a days flight without suffering for it later. Today though, it was feeling like he'd gone a little too far the night before, the pegasus stretching out on a cloud and peering over the edge towards the streets of Ponyville below while his wings lightly complained and tried to annoy him.

The aches didn't bother him at all, him easily ignoring it as he teetered on the edge of a nap, the cloud acting as a nice fluffy bed with his cloak serving well enough in mimicking a blanket. However, Darrus had been spending most of that day so far sleeping, and his body, with the exception of his wings, were beginning to protest the excess sleep, instead urging him to stretch his legs and find something that could hold his interest and make his trip out here worth the soreness of his limbs.

Yawning, stretching then standing up and giving the streets below another once over, Darrus dived over the side of the cloud that was serving as his free bed. He plummeted quickly in a nose dive before flaring his wings out just in time to slow himself down and pull up to land with a skid, the pegasus kicking up dirt then dusting himself off and folding his wings, which had definitely hadn't enjoyed that, back under his cloak before trotting off in search of anything worth checking out.

Original Character Profiles / Darrus
« on: December 29, 2013, 09:59:13 pm »

Art by Syn on the Pony-A-Day Tumblr.

Name: Darrus

Race: Pegasus

Gender: Male

Age: Mid-twenties

Physical Description: A rust coloured pony with charcoal grey hair in a rough vagrant style (or lack thereof), just under medium-length matching his tail, and dark green eyes wearing a brown traveling cloak with a hood. His cloak conceals his belt and saddle bags as well as his wings on most occassions. His cutie mark is a few light blue wavy lines shaped into a bullseye.

Special Talent: Ranged accuracy with anything from throwing things to firing crossbows, especially when highly mobile, such as when he is flying.

Likes: Hard cider, the taverns that sell hard cider, the ponies who drink the cider with him, and the occasional hoof fights he gets into with said ponies. Traveling.

Dislikes: Being told what to do or forced to stay cooped up indoors for long periods of time.

Strengths: Very fast and agile, Darrus is a highly skilled flyer with quick reflexes and a self taught method of fighting with his hooves and wings that focuses on speed and movement. Complimenting his fighting style, and possibly contradicting what his usual vagrant appearance may make others believe, Darrus is resourceful and a quick and intelligent thinker that has a lot of "street smarts", as well as an understanding on how to remain quiet and stealthy when he needs to be. Darrus has a very high pain tolerance.

Weaknesses: His resistance to pain can backfire with him pushing himself further than he can actually handle, risking serious injury out of his stubbornness to not give up. While quick to be friendly, and extremely loyal once earned as a friend, Darrus can be slow to truly trust those he meets. Darrus can be very difficult to cooperate with if he comes to dislike somepony.

Bio: A young and fit stallion headed nowhere in particular, Darrus is a drifter who has traveled all over Equestria simply because he can. Born into a rather poor family in Cloudsdale, his education was basic at best with no real hope of higher learning being likely in the pegasus' future, instead a career working in the weather factory or possibly trying to join the guard to take advantage of his talent being the most likely directions his life was headed in. Not wanting to be stuck making clouds or rainbows all the time, and never having been all that good at following orders, the pegasus eventually, once he'd reached the age of an adult, decided to just leave his home one day, his eyes only set on the horizon as his goal.

Using clouds to sleep in, rain clouds to bathe, and fields to graze, what little money Darrus ever needed was earned through odd and very temporary jobs he came across as he wandered from place to place, frequenting taverns and getting into scuffles with local authorities. Never having had reason to remain anywhere for very long, Darrus can be anywhere for varying amounts of time as he looks around for anything interesting before moving on.

Extra Details: Carries a small dagger and throwing knife for self defense, both concealed under his cloak and located on his belt and shoulder respectively. Is a pretty good singer, though has no formal training.
