As Applejack explained the dangers one may have to face when reaching the castle Darrus held an ever widening grin as he felt his wings start to stir as if wanting to take him into the air right then and there. He took note of all the, to him at least, exciting things prowling the darkness of the forest on the path towards the castle and it only caused his imagination to further hype up the place along with whatever may or may not have been left inside. If it was indeed dangerous to reach then it would have had even less visitors in the past, right? Which means higher chances of some cool stuff still jsut waiting to be picked up by some handsome pegasus looking to have some fun? It wasn't even that far of a trip on hoof if Applejack's estimate of somwhere between one to two hours was accurate.

"Mmmmmmmaybe," Darrus replied, his grin easily making it incredibly obvious which way he was leaning with the idea if AJ were to look back at him, "Would one, should they decided to go out there, be able to see the castle from over the trees or is it entirely covered? I'm assuming it isn't easy to spot if it's 'sorta' hidden. In fact, what's stopping a pegasus from just flying there to begin with? Other than making the entire trip incredibly boring and uneventful I mean. Seems my wings would eliminate several of the problems such as getting lost and needing to take the path to the castle at all. Is it just impossible to find from the air?" Darrus actually sounded hopeful at the thought as it would mean forcing one such as himself to actually go through the forest instead of over it, which would of course lead to a much more interesting trip.

All the while his hooves kept up their work in finishing Applejack's full back massage, Darrus smiling over how his idea of something embarrassing for AJ to do as the loser of their competition ended up with her seeming to enjoy it far more than him. Was fine by Darrus as he was happy to give the massage to the mare, the way she reacted to his hooves having been plenty fun for him.

Darrus's hooves kept busy as Applejack described the super spooks present in the super spooks forest castle, them working her back and continuing to kneed the muscles as they slowly descended to near the final leg of the massage at her lower back should no objections be made. Traps, vague scary things and her friend playing the organ without having told them she'd be there. A prank, or just a crazy coincidence? Darrus had no way of knowing, but he did know that the mare's answer left the 'Pony of Shadows' unconfirmed as to if it was actually a thing or not. Bundle the prospect of discovering if such a thing was true or not along with the apparent excitement promised by a castle of spooky tricks and traps and Darrus was finding himself becoming increasingly interested in such a place.

The further details, such as who the castle belonged to and how the Everfree may or may not have come to be according to another of AJ's friends, tickled his adventurous spirit. A castle full of traps in the middle of a dangerous forest that used to belong to the Princesses? Hmm...

"Can't say I've heard of the castle before, nor about this origin story for the forest itself," he replied, a few thoughts running through his head at the new information that he'd been given, "Seeds did all of that? Or is it just the trees themselves that grew up from the seeds and the crazy phenomenons and such followed after? Actually, considering what that guy is supposed to be like from what I've heard, it feels safe to assume everything going on in there is his fault.

"This castle though," he continued, pulling back one of his hooves to roll it and give a small pop of his ankle before returning to his massaging, "sounds like it could be a fun place to spend a night. Out of curiosity, how far into the forest would you say it was? And how hidden is it if at all? I mean, you and your friends seem to know exactly where it is, and if you and Rainbow went there just to try and see who would get scared out first then it must not be a very hazardous trip." Maybe there was even treasure in that castle... though, Darrus may have just been building the castle up with his own imagination at this point...

Darrus's question could have easily come off as a silly one with how Applejack had so clearly been giving him the answer since he'd started, each moan and how easily she was moving to his massage keeping an amused smirk on his face as he continuously delivered pleasure with his hooves. He knew he was pretty decent with giving a massage, but he hadn't thought he'd been so good as to almost make a mare melt in his hooves. Maybe he was better than he first thought? Hmm... Darrus played with the idea of maybe applying to be a masseuse if ever he was looking for another job to make some quick bits. If he could recreate this kind of experience for other ponies as well he'd probably end up pretty well off, though he didn't dismiss the possibility of this just being unique to AJ as she may just not get massages very often with all of her farm work keeping her busy.

At her failing to recognize his joke for what it was, Darrus momentarily considered playfully pointing out how he actually did normally wear clothes, albeit just a simple cloak, but instead decided to focus on lowering his massage from the mare's shoulders to her upper back at her accepting of his offer to continue. At her rant Darrus would have just given a small shrug as whether or not she was a bearer of any of the elements made little difference to him right now as he just continued to listen for any talk of older and less well known adventures she may have been a part of.

"Real mare of action, ain't ya?" Darrus spoke in response to how she'd saved the town from stampedes in the past. He perked his ear in interest, just as Applejack probably predicted he would, when she began to talk about a castle in the Everfree supposedly haunted by some left behind magic of that Nightmare Moon pony. Darrus hadn't actually known about there being a castle out in the Everfree, his knowledge of the forest not being very in depth, and this talk of AJ and her friend Rainbow having hung around it in a test of courage was quite amusing to him.

"Castle in the Everfree..." Darrus echoed, interest evident in his voice as his hooves started to work a little lower from AJ's upper back.

"Oh, this? I just picked up a few things here and there," he went on to answer her question, being kind of vague but not really having any other way he could explain it as he lacked having taken any lessons or proper classes, "I've given a few before and received my fair share, and I'm pretty quick learner so I just picked up on it." At her mention of being on the verge of going limp, Darrus grinned at his own apparent skill and her enjoyment of it.

"Well, we can't have you falling over. You should go ahead and lay down. Besides, would make this easier for me and better for you.

"So... this castle in the Everfree..." he continued, making it evident that he didn't know about such a thing until now as he either kept up with his current attempt to massage her back should she remain sitting or managing to apply more pressure for a deeper massage should she decide to lie down, "was what Granny saying true? Did you or Rainbow manage to catch any sight of this 'Pony of Shadows'? Or did it turn out to just be a spooky story and it was really the creepy atmosphere that caused the two of you to decide on a tie?"

Darrus stood up for a moment so as to reposition where he was as AJ sat down, putting himself a little behind her and on the side of the shoulder she'd been rubbing earlier. Rolling his hooves as if to loosen them up in preparation of starting her massage, Darrus felt a bit disappointed to learn that the Zap Apples had already come and gone for the year as he was starting to become increasingly curious as to just how accurate Applejack's descriptions of the signs leading up them as well as the apples themselves were. Well... looked like he'd missed out...

Anyway, moving on Darrus began to use his hooves to work the muscles of AJ's shoulder, first trying to relieve her muscles of any tension they may have had and loosen her muscles up before putting a little bit more pressure on to try and assist with relieving any pain she may still have had lingering from her earlier arm wrastlin incident. Unlike Applejack who by her own word had little experience in massaging other ponies, Darrus seemed to have a much better idea of what he was doing, whether that be due to experience of giving massages himself or just picking up on what others did whenever he received one who could say. Either way, his hooves worked with some knowledge as he tried his best to make this pleasant for the mare.

"Interesting jobs..." Darrus echoed, keeping his eyes on what he was doing as he thought on her question, "Hmm... Well, as I mentioned before when we first met, most of the work I get is simple labor and junk. The kind of stuff where somepony might hire a walk in for some quick and cheap help in getting some hole dug into the ground. I doubt you'd find a story where I'm digging a ditch very interesting though unless I added in some buried treasure, so give me a sec...

"Oh! Have I ever mentioned that I'm a movie star?" Darrus eventually said after several seconds of thought, "Weeeeell... Maybe not a movie star really, but I was in a film once. At least I think I'm still in it. I was just an extra though for the back ground so it's not like I got to do or say anything. I made up for that by mugging for the camera like crazy every single chance I had though, and since nopony ever seemed to notice, care or say anything I guess it made it in to the film. Unless they cut my in post production or had things set up to keep everything in the background, like me, blurred, but honestly who would do such things to a face like this?

"What else... I sailed on a ship for a couple weeks over on the east coast. Was toying with the idea of maybe traveling to a different country once and at the time couldn't figure out how I'd afford or work my way onto an airship, so I signed up to work on a boat running up and down the coast with cargo to see if life out on the open water would suit me well enough to make the trip. I decided no after the second week, I wasn't huge on the lack of space on board and the constant rocking was kind of bugging me, but there was one moment that came out of it that I think was pretty cool.

"We were heading up north to drop off some stuff I forget for some company that I forget when... Well, you know how some sea life are supposed to jump up out of the water and alongside a ship when it's sailing? That happened a couple times with us, but once was weird. We'd taken a detour through deeper waters than was normal for use to get around some winds or something, I dunno, the captain just said we needed to change course for whatever reason, and while we were out there some kind of huge... thing started following us through the water. Most of us assumed it was a whale of some sort, but even a couple of the more veteran guys were a bit iffy about how accurate that was from the silhouette we kept seeing in the water. Just looked kinda funny for a whale... shape was kinda off, though I'm no expert.

"That's not the best part though," Darrus claimed, taking one of his hooves back so as to make a few gestures as he told his story to convey some excitement he felt over what he'd seen, "at one point, after it must have been following us for at least a half hour, it came closer to the surface and broke it with what we think was it's back. Like a hump or something. Was half the size of our ship and a weird purple color, and it made this kind of motion as if it was gonna rotate onto it's side in the water which caused our ship to lean some, I guess because its fin or whatever was right under us? Keep in mind I'm no expert.

"Anyway, I guess it changed it's mind for whatever reason and decided to sink back under. We lost track of it a few seconds later as it swam lower and after that we didn't see it again," he finished, resting his hoof that he'd pulled away onto AJ's other shoulder as he started to work the muscles of both to give her a better neck massage, "I'll admit that maybe my imagination has exaggerated some of that a touch, but I still think it was kinda cool. Still haven't really figured out what it might have been though.

"For something less fantastical and much much easier to believe, I once modeled for an art class," he informed with another grin, "... ****." he tagged on as a joke.

"So, do you have any crazy stor- Oh. Right. Element and all. Guess that was going to be a silly question. What about before you were one of them famous ponies with one of them famous necklaces? Did you ever get into any cool adventures back then too? How am I doing by the way? There any other spots where you feel stressed and could use a good rub?" Believe it or not, Darrus was not actually trying to make a funny here and was merely asking for serious, "Just say the word and I'll do what I can."

Darus had approved of the increased pressure behind the massage, this being evident by his slight widening of his smile and second sigh given just before AJ began to respond to his questions. The mention of their being more than just apples being grown around the farm and how other Apple family members tended to the other produce earned only a slight shrug from Darrus. Chances were indeed high that if said corn, grapes and what have you were present on the farm that Darrus would have seen it at some point, but since his work revolved around the apple orchard AJ cared for Darrus paid little mind to the rest as it wasn't his responsibility and they didn't seem to have as many fancy and or famous products being made out of them. He did recall spotting the occasional pony working on other parts of the farm though, however as he too at the time was working and AJ never seemed to say anything objecting towards their presence Darrus had always just left them to their work figuring that if he were to eventually meet them proper that it would most likely happen after hours or something along those lines. This led Darrus to only give a small shake of his head as AJ mentioned them to indicate that he hadn't yet had the pleasure.

Moving on, Darrus sounded a low hum and gave a short nod of his head when AJ spoke the correct name for the jam that sent them down this branch of the conversation, the ring of Zap Apple Jam clicking in his mind as it cleared up his memory of what the ponies he'd heard talking about it were saying... which would actually cause him some confusion during the ensuing explanation.

His interest over this new thing doubled when it was revealed to him that the apples needed to make the jam originated from the Everfree, then tripled when apparently Granny Smith had gone out to the Forest herself to pick the apples that were later used to plant them onto the farm, at first causing Darrus to imagine the elderly pony venturing out into the forest and going through who knows what kind of obstacles to harvest these fancy apples and bring them back home. The amusing mental image was dropped when AJ went on to explain how quickly the apple trees grew, this earning a slightly skeptical raising of Darrus's eyebrow at the mare.

Instantly? Did she... need to at least add water? Well, if she said so...

The skepticism only grew when AJ began to list off the many signs that heralded the coming of these zap apples, the first of which sounding more like a superstitious belief slash coincidence to Darrus - a second amusing mental image of Granny Smith managing to work its way into the pegasus's mind also - while the second sign started off sounding normal but soon escalated to incredible again. Leaves growing? Darrus could buy that. A strong wind? Easy to believe. A mass of dark clouds coming over the orchard? Uh... sure? The trees start to glow while blue sparks-

Darrus furrowed his brow. AJ was the Element of Honesty, right? This meant she never ever lied - or so Darrus felt safe to assume - and in fact hated lying if Applebloom was to be believed, but did that pure honesty extend to telling small white lies for the sole purpose of messing with somepony for fun? Like, for a prank? Darrus was starting to think there was a bit of breathing room when it came to that rule, especially when she began to explain the third sign as at that point it was sounding like she was just making stuff up.

A murder of crows flying in an apple shaped pattern while sparking glowy glowy flowers sprout on the trees? Right...

And then there's a meteor shower. Because space. Darrus was beginning to wonder if she was going to toss in a solar eclipse too while she was at it.

Finishing up with the events that lead to actually being able to harvest the apples... she sounded like she was actually being serious... and Applejack was the Bearer of Honesty, so...

Nah. No way. I mean, come on that many crazy things couldn't seriously happen just as signs of a special type of apple nearing its ideal harvesting time. no, she was most likely just screwing with him... Maybe... Still weird how a couple of things she'd mentioned had actually been what he'd heard those ponies in town talking about, but maybe its just a local story or something that all the ponies living here knew... Yeah...

Darrus then became certain that he wouldn't be able to help not chuckling the next time he saw Granny Smith after picturing her doing all of these extra things for the zap apples that AJ was listing off, the most interesting of which being the bucket bunny alphabet combo that caused Darrus to give AJ a questioning look after she'd followed it up with claiming to know just how ridiculous this all sounded, him wondering if she was indeed hearing the same things he was, He dropped this when she began to talk about how big of an event this jam was and how profitable it is for them every year, the mention of whoever that Rich pony was not meaning anything to Darrus as he didn't recognize the name but the fact that somepony wealthy  went out of their way to secure themselves a large quantity of this jam sure did catch his interest.

Hmm...

When AJ finally paused her very interesting yet hard to believe explanation to ask why Darrus had brought up this topic in the first place, he looked back at the mare, again appearing skeptical for a few moments as he narrowed his eyes.

".. Really?" He asked simply, not sounding the least bit sarcastic as he was just asking for confirmation that she hadn't been pulling his leg this whole time, not that he'd complain much mind but... never mind.

"Well, I brought up the jam because those ponies I mentioned hearing about it from had been discussing a couple of the things you just talked about," he turned his head back forward, him flexing his wings to get a feel for how well AJ had done in massaging them and smiling at how much better they felt as he believed her to be a natural, not perfect mind but much better in his opinion than most who would try it for the first time, "and I thought once I'd mentioned it to you that we would both have a chuckle over it before having you tell me that it's just a special flavor of jam you make around here that just had some added spice to it or something. But now... uh...

"Really?" Darrus asked again, once more turning his head to face AJ though this time he looked more surprised than skeptical, "... Huh... What comes first? Cider Season or these Zap Apples?"

Giving his wings one more flex, Darrus gave yet another happy sigh at the improvement over his aches before spreading his smile into a teasing grin and turning his body to face AJ fully.

"Also, I think I can start returning the favor of that massage now, if you'd let me."

"Eh, it ain't as complicated as you might assume," Darrus assured after having given a small and jokingly exaggerated motion of his hoof to show his disappointment over having AJ shoot down the idea of a kiss, "and come on, loosen up a bit, eh? You might just like it." Darrus, being Darrus, couldn't help a small waggle of his eyebrows as he extended his wing out for AJ to massage. When she began to knead his wing Darrus let out a small sigh and relaxed into the massage, closing his eyes as she was already doing a decent job for somepony not having ever done this for another pegasus before as she'd mentioned.

"You sure you haven't done this before? You ain't doin' half bad. Feel free to put a bit more pressure on, by the way," he said, looking back at the mare with a smile carrying a shade of gratitude as this was already doing wonders for his wing as he'd been thinking about checking out that spa in town about their massages on offer for some time now.

"I find most ponies like to believe that pegasi wings are fragile to the point of being made of glass, but those same ponies seem to forget how often pegasi deal with hard landings and just how durable they can actually be. Or maybe it's just different between each pegasus..." Darrus, hoping not to have this be entirely awkward for AJ, tried to have some small talk to promote a more comfortable mood, "my wings at least seem to be almost as tough as my legs so they can usually handle whatever you would normally have in mind for them...

"... For this kind of thing." he tagged on, realizing what he said had the chance of possibly being taken as one of his dirtier suggestion... though he then noticed that he may not have actually made it all that suggestive and actually changed that with his addition at the end... Eh.

"So anyway, I've been wondering about something I over heard some ponies talking about while in town last weekend," he tried to shift focus, extending his other wing out for AJ to start on once she finished with his first, "Kept slipping my mind. Was something about a... what was it... Zap jam? Zapple jam? Something like that. Heard you guys make it at some point? What's that all about? And is there any other fancy stuff you guys produce round here that I don't know about yet?"

Figured I'd try to give him a voice.

Decided on Jason Marsden, heard here voicing the bad guy(Major spoilers for a game no one cares about, by the way) and starts talking at around the one minute mark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opYeD9k8Czk

Clip chosen because that game has a knife fight with a velociraptor in it.

Also, for funsies, I figure this is the kind of thing that is probably playing in his head most of the time:

Hmm...

Yeah...

Wait!

...

No, yeah, Darrus was doomed.

Whatever ground he would gain from his attempts to push forward was minimal at best as he was met with AJ's resistance, the mare then managing to make up for it quickly and prevent him from getting a solid lead. He could tell that she was trying to wear him down, similarly to how he was trying to do the same to her, but she had taken the option of only using more of her strength when he tried to push and, as he was quickly learning, she seemed to be just naturally stronger than he was in terms of sheer muscle strength. A lifetime spent as an earth pony on a farm made such a revelation far from surprising. Still, just as he had with the race, Darrus refused to admit to the defeat heading his way until it had actually fully arrived, and he fought to keep himself in the game using whatever reserves of energy he still had stowed away within him after a full day of farm work coupled with a race across town.

Feeling near his end, Darrus was preparing himself for when his muscles would start to give out when suddenly he felt AJ's strength give way, his hoof suddenly pinning hers in the blink of an eye which triggered the pegasus to immediately jump into the air over his sudden and unexpected victory with a small cheer of "woo!"

"Oh, AJ," he began after performing a couple of small loops in the air, "I forgot to mention how I can bend solid steel! Sorry about that! Next time I'll warn you about my amazing super pony abilities!" When noticing her rubbing her shoulder, Darrus at first wondered if maybe she'd was putting on a show, giving her a brief skeptical look before remembering how she was the Element of Honesty.

"You alright?" he asked, wings making little flutters as he lowered himself down to the ground as if about to present himself to a group of sheering fans, "I didn't go and dislocate your shoulder there when I locked in my win, did I?" While he couldn't help his usual cocky attitude forcing him to slip in a sarcastic jab, Darrus raised a brow afterwards to show he had actually been serious about his question towards her shoulder and whether or not it was alright. Neither of them had properly stretched really during this competition of theirs, so he recognized the potential of having such an oversight back fire on them into a minor injury.

The question of what Darrus was going to have AJ do now that he'd won caused him to hum and rub his chin in thought, the massaging AJ was giving her shoulder sparking a quick idea as he felt his wings and how achy they were. He'd been ignoring it most of the night since he'd only been hovering and making quick trips mostly, but they did still feel rather worked from the daily chores he and AJ had finished earlier that day.

'You can do me favor with my wings here," he answered, extending out his wings fully as he spoke and giving her a smile, "they've been bugging me ever since we called it a day for the farm work, so I wouldn't mind a good rubbin. Also, you would then need to allow me to return the favor for your shoulder there and give you a massage myself." his idea of something embarrassing for AJ having been proposed, his smile grew a bit more mischievous.

"Course, if you don't want to bother with all that I'd be willing to settle for a quick little kiss."

A little bit of a lead was better than none as Darrus put his effort into holding AJ's hoof where it was, muscles in his leg bulging from the strain as he kept his grip firm and grit his teeth, a few small beads of sweat beginning to form on his brow from all the work he'd been putting his body through that night. Darrus's plan now was to keep AJ's hoof there for as long as he could, using his strength more to hold things even in this advantageous position instead of gain more ground and force AJ to hopefully expend extra energy in trying to make up for what she'd lost before trying to go further. Whether several seconds passed with them at a stalemate or AJ managed to return their hooves to their starting position, Darrus would again try to act by giving another burst of his energy in an attempt to gain a greater foothold in this competition, the stallion either pushing or pressing down on the mare's hoof with a grunt wherever it was at the time and leaning his head along with it as if that would somehow help. His wings involuntarily spread out from his torso to serve no purpose during the exercise, one extending a bit outwards parallel the side of the crate promising victory as if reaching while the other remained almost folded to his side though looser.

Hoof wrestlin, huh? Kinda made sense in the end that it would be a test of strength to decide the competition. They'd already tested accuracy which could have been taken as a show of dexterity, then moved on to speed, so why not end it on strength? Darrus figured he could hold his own. He knew full well that AJ was a strong mare, I mean she bucked trees and did all kinds of farm work for a living, but just so long as they weren't wrestling with their back hooves - Darrus recognizing that a joke could have been made here had he not been too winded from his sprint to think of one - he was as confident as always.

He followed the mare inside, watching as she set up their little improv table for their test of strength in hoof wrastle before sitting down on the opposite side of the crate and putting his elbow up onto its surface, him wrapping his hoof around her's firmly as they readied to start.

"On three," he said, looking her in the eye with playful determination, "One... two... three!" on the call of three Darrus, as was normal for him, tried to act both first and quickly, right away putting a great deal of his strength into trying to either end the match right away with a quick slam or at least push AJ's hoof lower to the point where it would be easier for him to hold out in the ensuing struggle.

Well, at least she hadn't seemed to notice his splash into the mud, Darrus slowing his run down to more of a jog as he reached the barn himself since AJ had clearly won and he no longer needed to rush as well as needed to let his legs have some semblance of a break. Nearing the mare, he breathed heavily as he sat down, him swallowing to try and help his dry throat before raising a hoof up to his chest with some exaggeration.

"Clearly, my wings being stuck to my sides caused me to suffer greater wind drag than you," he claimed between gasps and with a smile as she pat his shoulder, obviously joking as he made up a bogus excuse for why she was able to beat him and wiped some mud from his brow, "you by nature were born with a sleeker design better suited for ground travel, and clearly began with an unfair advantage. But I still must congratulate you as it is not every day somepony proves themselves faster than me."

One more competition. Darrus hummed as he looked at his surroundings for inspiration.

"What if..." he began, scratching his chin thoughtfully as he tried to brainstorm ideas, "We both chopped wood? Maybe we could each have our own pile of logs and whoever finishes first wins. Or..." Darrus continued still looking around and spotting a basket that normally served to carry apples, "we could juggle some apples, I do believe apples are plentiful in this neck of Equestria so there should be no shortage of em to use. Whoever can manage the highest number is declared winner. Course we could balance a bucket of water on our heads and see who could stand on a narrow beam for longer without either falling or spilling. Or we could just go with a simple hoof wrastlin' match." he offered, Darrus then pausing to hear either AJ's opinion or her own ideas for what they could do.

Darrus was in trouble, he knew it once AJ was next to him again as, unless there was another sharp turn or something else that could somehow be turned to his advantage, he wasn't sure if he'd be able t pull ahead of her again. Even AJ's challenge wasn't enough to assist at this point, as while his spirit was ready to keep going and stay even with the mare, his legs seemed to have their own opinion on the matter. They had well reached Darrus's usual sprinting distance for being on the ground with no wing assistance, Darrus having actually done quite well in keeping even up to this point, but it was time his legs started keeping him from hurting himself.

AJ began to pull ahead much to Darrus's dismay, him already falling a bit behind when they reached the fence. He could still win this though! Or so he told himself due to his never give up attitude, his chances actually becoming pretty slim at this point and only made slimmer when he attempted to get over the fence.

Take a pony that has been flying for most of his life, wings assisting in almost everything he did from a very young age. Now take that same pony, and have him try to jump something that was almost if not just as tall as he was without the assistance of a flap from those same wings.

It was less graceful than one would think coming from a pegasus.

He only jumped high enough to have his hooves get caught on the fence and force him to fall forward and threaten to face plant into a big muddy puddle on the other side. Instincts kicked in when he toppled over, his wings snapping out to prevent his landing from being too hard as he pulled up enough to turn his inevitable face plant into him smacking into the puddle chest first instead, the mud splashing all over him and his cloak as he was forced to spend a second laying in the puddle with the wind having almost been knocked out of him.

Grumbling as AJ was given plenty of time to solidify her lead, Darrus forced himself back to his hooves after a second or two with him pushing off his now very dirty hood that had fallen over his head and then briefly wondered if he'd technically been disqualified already after having his wings save him but shrugging it off and breaking back into a now rather tired sprint, Darrus weaving around several apple trees as he ran through the edge of the orchard and towards the barn.

The race wasn't over till they reached the barn, so he still had a chance...! Ugh...

AJ's tease was enough to stir Darrus's competitive spirit as he grinned and managed to get a small boost in speed to catch up. When faced with the group in their way, Darrus again felt the instinct to simply fly over them but was forced to suppress the urge with a brief roll of his eyes and small "uuugh" as he stuck to the decided rules. Instead following AJ's lead, the pegasus was up and over the crates immediately after she was, him being darn near right next to her when she called out the upcoming turn.

Darrus, managing to keep himself equal in terms of speed with AJ for the time being, flashed her a cocky grin as they neared the turn, his more agile pegasus body allowing him to make it more sharply than AJ and allowing him to snatch away the lead for himself as he pulled a bit ahead.

"Oh nooooo!" he called back to the mare in a playfully mocking tone in reference to her having lost her lead on him, "Like lightning! I warned ya! Call it off now and I'll show mercy!" he offered before looking back in front of him and noticing a mess in the road. Apparently, some ponies had been busy trimming a number of trees along the main road, and they must have friggin taken their time in having gotten around to this as not only were they only now finishing up by picking up their mess at this late hour, but the size of the branches they cut down weren't no twigs. Large and generally scattered all over the road, the branches in the path of the racing ponies demanded some hoofwork and agility to get past if they didn't want to slow down, and since Darrus had finally taken the lead slowing down was the last thing on his mind.

He swerved past the first couple, speeding past one of the ponies working to gather everything up and get it out of the way so closely that he nearly knocked him over. After that he hopped over a particularly large branch that was half as tall as he was then was forced to slow down a bit to deftly step through a mess of smaller sticks to avoid stepping and possibly slipping on one or getting his hoof caught and face planting. Clear of the hazards he went back into his top speed, ignoring the shouts from the work ponies behind him as he went.

"Lighting both in the air," Darrus repeated when AJ said he was going to race without his wings, him dropping back to the ground after having found the last of the glass in the branches and landing next to her, wings outstretched, 'and on the ground." He finished, snapping his wings to his sides as he used that as his way of saying he agreed to his being restrained to using only his legs.

After finishing their clean up, and after Darrus had told Rainbow Dash that it had been a pleasure meeting her in case she decided to fly off on her own business, Darrus lined up next to AJ as she drew the starting line and began to explain the rules for their run to the farm. When AJ mentioned making things more interesting by having the loser do something embarrassing, Darrus grinned, ideas already floating through his mind when he agreed with a simple "You are so on" and put himself into a ready stance.

As the farm pony started to count down, Darrus's first instinct was to spread his wings as his body immediately wanted to either take flight or use the flapping of his wings to assist speed, this of course being his most natural form of movement as he spent more time in the air than n the ground, but rules were rules and by the time AJ reached the count of one he'd managed to shrug off the urge to fly and kept his wings pinned to his sides. Besides, he doubted he would actually need them to beat AJ as it were, this thought feeling both more and less accurate at the same time when the race began.

Both ponies exploded into full speed gallops, Darrus even without his wings proving to be capable of keeping up with AJ as he remained neck and neck with her, the tree behind them quickly shrinking into the distance as they sped onwards. Darrus, being in the shape he was in and having as much constant exercise as he did due to his traveling lifestyle, had very high endurance and was naturally quick, both in the air and on the ground, but without the assistance of his wings to keep him pushing forward he was only a fairly decent sprinter on his hooves at best. There was no doubt in his mind that if he had his wings he would be having much less trouble keeping up with AJ, the mare already beginning to edge slightly ahead of him as they shot down the road, but when against an earth pony who was in the kind of shape that AJ was and forced to only use his legs - a handicap for him where it was a strength for her-... Yeah...

Still, Darrus was not one to admit defeat until after he'd been officially defeated and the winner named, so he pushed himself harder to make up for the small lead AJ was starting to gain, his energy and endurance still keeping up as he again became even with her, but his legs were starting to slowly shake their figurative head at him.

Darrus waited to hear AJ's answer, ears swiveling to zero in on her as he eagerly awaited her response, though he was trying to play it off as he usually was. This weak facade crumbled a bit when he heard her say yes to his desire to take her out on a date, the stallion dropping it in order to perform a small and restrained hoof pump in celebration as well as say "Yessssss" quietly under his breath before looking back up at AJ with a slightly exaggerated raising of his eyebrow when she mentioned her own conditions.

The first one was no issue, if she wanted to help pick up the mess then he wasn't gonna stop her, but the second condition caused Darrus to look away for a brief moment, him rubbing a hoof on the back of his neck and avoiding eye contact with the farm pony for a couple seconds then sniffing and shrugging it off with a simple, "Sure. No problem."

The remark about preserving his pride snapped him back to his usual self however as he chuckled at the idea and took off into a light hover so as to pick out the bits of glass that had gotten stuck in the branches first and prevent them from possibly falling on them from above.

"I admire your imagination, AJ," said Darrus while he pulled a small garbage bag hed gotten from Lamplight for this clean up from is saddle bags and started searching for glass, "but let's save the fairy tales for your sister and her friends. For you see, I am lightning both in the air and on the ground, so my pride wasn't in any danger to begin with. I could have probably been able to run to the farm, tag the barn and make it all the way back here before you could even make it out of earshot of this here tree." He boasted with a grin as he dropped another piece of glass into the bag and scanned for more.
