MarketSquare Hijinks
« on: June 02, 2014, 01:22:15 pm »
It was the afternoon of the day after the festival, Kit having found lodgings after the events of the lovely festival, the song Ivory had sung was in the back of the throat as she hummed it, looking around.  By pony's reactions, it was clear...that the last gryphon to have shown up, wasn't exactly pleasent, so she tried to keep herself pleasant.  It was..difficult with jet black fur and blood red feathers though.  She wore a modified harness, black leather studded with silver that strapped about her chest, belly and just infront of her hind regions, a decorative thing that jingled pleasantly as she walked, eyes looking out for the Candle-Pony from before,  or anyone else of interest.

Her wings flexed lightly as she purred a little in the back of her throat, remembering how Ivory looked, then it petered out as she realized that, well, she deserved Schwambat, or at least Kit thought.  They'd make a cute couple.  She chirped pleasantly to herself and returned a greeting from a pair of ponies, her eyes also on the look out for available real-estate...a boutique like she wanted would cost money and have to be in a permanent place.

Kindle yawned lazily, then sat up with a start. The sun was much higher in the sky than she would have liked; she must have overslept. Well, that's what you get for wandering around Ponyville late at night, she thought to herself. Although she had to admit that Ivory's performance had been well worth the wait. Kindle yawned again and began to hurriedly put together her cart to bring to the market. On her work table she found a scribbled note that read: "Kit, Black, Cherry." Kindle scrunched her nose trying to remember why she had written those words last night. Was it... Oh, right, the griffon she'd met at Ivory's festival who'd asked about cherry-scented, black candles. Kindle levitated a chunk of wax, a few vials of scents, and her spell book into her saddlebag to allow her to start working on designing the candle during the day. Then, she called Coal over and set out for the market.

Kindle pulled her cart up to the same spot she'd occupied yesterday and quickly set it up as her candle booth. Maybe some of the ponies (or griffins) she'd met last night would drop by. Kindle heard a faint jingling of bells, and found the source to be none other than the griffin she'd just been thinking of. "Hey there, Kit," she called, waving across the market square.

Kit blinked a little as she clacked her beak, it was still early enough that a lot of market stalls had yet to be stood up.  She had decided to go on to look at realty and return later when the square was more full, when a familiar voice drew her attention.  Her tail held high, it began to swish in innocent delight as she bespied Kindle. "Hullo Candle-Scent!" She said, despite using the wrong name, her voice was playful enough to make Kindle realize that Kit was probably just pulling her leg.

Now that Kindle had a good look at the gryphon, she could see the harness ended around Kindle's neck but looked like a slightly flared collar, like it could be added onto in some way.  The gryphon plopped down infront of the market stall smiling. "How's life?"

"Not bad," Kindle replied. "I overslept some, but other than that I'm pretty good." She yawned again, but the exercise from pulling the cart to the square and the bright sun were helping her wake up. Focusing on Kit again, Kindle took a closer look at Kit's harness. "Hey, you said you were a designer, right? Did you make that yourself?" she asked. The collar seemed rather ornate, and the style quite different from the work she'd seen of the unicorn seamstress that lived in Ponyville. As Kindle unpacked her saddlebags, levitating some cat food into a bowl underneath the cart for Coal to munch on, she caught sight of her candle making supplies. "I didn't have the chance to work on your black-cherry candle last night, but I'll probably be able to get started today. Were you interested in any others? I've got plenty for you to look at, if you want."

Kit let out a soft chirp of amusement. "Sleeping in is sometimes not a bad thing, Let's us center ourselves, besides, after last night, fairly sure we all get a free pass to oversleep a little." She said with a bob of her head.  "I did! Faux-leather with silver bells..." She said with a conspiratorial wink. "I call it my 'Black Bindings' doesn't that sound like, ever so naughty?" She said with a chirp of amusement. "If you'd like, I could make you one..maybe dyed blue like a candle flame burning so very hot." She said in contemplation, her eyes settling on Kindle, not with the gaze of someone who pines for her, or the eyes of a friend, but the eyes of a designer seeing some potential before she quirked her head to the side, and let out a gentle purrr. "Oh, I can't wait for those candles." The friendly eyes returning as she peered over the cart. "Say, I've got a question for ya, Candle-Scent." She said using the nickname she'd given Kindle. "These candles are pretty rad.  If I can find a big enough place, would you consider say, a partnership? So you won't have to hitch yourself to a cart every day?"

"I'm more of a frills and dresses girl, myself," Kindle said to Kit's offer of a harness, "but I suppose it's good to try out different styles every once and a while." While not nearly as pretentious as some ponies from Canterlot, Kindle tended to prefer a more classic style. Kindle smiled as the griffin expressed excitement at the candles-in-progress. She had been creating receipies and designs and mentally testing them since she had picked out the supplies in the morning. She guessed that Kit thought up designs all the time as well, although for clothing rather than for candles.

"A partnership?" said Kindle in mild surprise. In all of her planning back at home to start her own business, a partnership was something she hadn't considered. "Candles and Clothing... seems like an odd combination to me, but I can't say it would be the strangest." She remembered walking past a store selling sofas and quills on the way to the market square this morning. "And a permanent location would be nice, although I'd probably bring the cart down every once and a while. After all, you never know who you might meet," she said, thinking of her encounter with DJ P0N-3 the other day. "The only other thing is... since I just bought a house here in Ponyville, I don't have a ton of bits to spare at the moment. I wouldn't be able to pitch in much to get a place."

The gryphon clicked her beak softly. "I can totally do frills and dresses." She said with a bob of her head." She said with a grin. "Something...dark lace, maybe with subtle blue-hot flames.." She said thinking before she shrugged her shoulders. "Ah, don't worry about the Bits. Call it an investment in a new friendship." She said with a small twitch of her wings, her eyes glancing around as she looked around the candles, sniffing one then the other, her leonine tail swishing, her throat fairly rumbling as she purred.

"Just gotta find a place and a way to buy." She said with a soft click of her beak. "Candles and Clothing...not a bad name..think of it less as the content as the *theme* of the story."

"Ooh, that does sound pretty," Kindle said, envisioning the dress Kit described. Her ears flicked back briefly in surprise when Kit told her not to worry about the money. Well, that was an offer she couldn't refuse. "Alright, then. I haven't heard of any buildings for sale, but like I said, I'm new here, so there are probably a bunch that I don't know about. Uh, just a sec, I think I've got a customer."

Kindle turned her attention to a mint green mare who'd asked for more cinnamon candles for a party yesterday than Kindle had in her cart at the time. She'd made sure to stock up this morning, and sure enough, the mare bought nearly all of the cinnamon candles. After completing the exchange and thanking the mare for her business, Kindle faced Kit again. "Looks like I may have some bits to chip in after all," she said, totaling the profit from the mare's large purchase on a receipt. "Although I do wonder why she needed quite so many cinnamon candles."

Kit shrugged her wings a little bit, causing the harness to jingle. "Let me look around a bit..." She said with a fluffing of her wings. "I'm going to take a peek around and if I find anything, I'll come back and let you know, Okay?, Okay." She said flicking her tail. "Keep those candles lit!" She said with a wink, before she strode off.

(T-T-TIME SKIP)

After about..oh, a couple of hours, in which Kindle could see the oddly colored gryphon duck from  place to place, she could almost see a lot of money being transacted, before with a cheerful Chirp, Kit landed beside her! "Well Partner...found us a place. I don't think they like gryphons here...they tried to charge me extra...but ah well, It's a good place, c'mon!" She said chirping gently in her excitement, before clicking her beak. "Oh, your..cart. Hrmn. Well." She said lashing her tail. "Want to pull it over to the building?" She asked, as she indicated with a foreclaw a building that sat about a block behind the square, a two story building with a broad front,It appeared to have a broad first floor, with two 'turrets' which indicated two seperate rooms. "See? A show room, and two bedrooms! One for me, one for you and coal." She said her tail swishing, clicking her beak, not a thought in the world that she hadn't included her partner in it, but hey! It was free space right? Silly arrogant gryphon.

"Alright, good luck," Kindle said to the griffon as she left to begin searching for a building. Kindle managed the cart, taking time with the indesicive ponies to help them figure out what they wanted to buy and working quickly for ponies who seemed impatient or in a hurry to get somewhere. In between customers, she kept an eye on Kit, who passed through the square in all different directions, dashing from one location to the next. She also began testing different scent combinations from the vials she had brought with her: one drop from a black vial and three from the red, or should it be two each from the red and the pink? One of her experimental scents was so overpoweringly flowery that she gagged when she sniffed it, and the other salesponies nearby began to give her dirty looks. Fortunately, Kindle had delt with many smell mishaps before, and quickly performed a spell to dissipate the unpleasant scent. By the time Kit returned, she had four different potential scents for the griffin to try out.

Kindle inspected the building from a distance when Kit pointed it out to her. It had the same style as many of the buildings in Ponyville, very different from the fancy designs in Canterlot that she was used to, but becoming more familiar each day. "Two bedrooms? Uh, well... I had assumed I'd be staying in my own house," Kindle said in surprise. Even though she had just bought the little house, she had already become rather attached to it. "Ah, we can figure it out later. Let's go check the place out!" Kindle packed up her cart and began pulling it across the square. As they were walking, Kindle opened her saddlebag and levitated the four vials of trial scents to Kit. "Here, smell these, and tell me if they're any good for your cherry candle."

Kit blinked, as she looked over Kindle. "Oh! Well don't have to I suppose stay there of course butcha can always use it as storage or a guest room or workshop." She said rubbing her chin lazily before she nodded. "Yes let's!" Padding over to the medium building, she would look left then right before she used a key to open the door. The first floor was a broad expanse that covered the first floor, furnished with some low tables and a display confer near the front that sectioned it off into two halves, front and back, the nearby stairs behind the counter obviously left to either turret. "Looks nice right?" She said with a happy click of the beak looking around as she walked a circle around the front, using her wings to hop over the countr to poke around the back.

"Hm, a workshop sounds nice," Kindle replied to Kit. Her current setup at home took up a considerable amount of room, and made the house feel a bit cramped, so she wouldn't mind having a place to transfer it over to. Kindle placed the scents she had made on the counter, assuming that Kit was too caught up in the excitement of exploring the building to try them out at the moment. She spun in a slow circle, taking in the room's features. Kindle's mother was an interior design pony, and had occasionally taken her daughter with her to jobs. Although Kindle didn't have the same level of knowledge or talent as her mother, she could see that the show room had a simple, neat design that would be easy for her and Kit to spruce up however they liked.

Kindle walked around the counter to join Kit in the space in the back of the show room, and headed towards the stairs. "I'm going to take a look upstairs," said Kindle, before trotting up the set of stairs to the right. The room at the top of the stairs had an angled ceiling and a large arched window overlooking the road, as well as a second window with a view of the lake. Kindle headed back downstairs, then took the left set of stairs to see the other room. It was situated slightly higher up, also with a nice view, and connected to a small attic above the room.

Kindle returned to the show room to discuss with Kit. "Both of the rooms look nice. Since you'll be sleeping and such here, and since you paid for the building, it's only fair that you get to decide which room you want," she said.

Kit tilted her head watching Kindle wander this way and that with a nod. "Sure." While Kindle was taking a look upstairs, Kit hopped up and lay on the counter, wiggling softly to get comfortable as she peered at Kindle when she returned, she had rolled to lay on her side a bit, her backpaws and foreclaws curled up against her side as she winked playfully.

"I bet the sun hits this spot juuussst right, 'cause it's still warm from the day..." She said with a soft chirp and a purr from her throat before she *finally* noticed Kindle's samples. "Oh! You have them. I'm such a scatter brain." She said as she slowly hopped down, sniffing at one, then the other scent, both scents made Kit's tail lash back and forth. "Oh..I could just imagine these two scents fillign up the store and totally working together...what's the phrase you pony's use? 'In Harmony'? Totally in harmony." She said her eyes half lidded with the pleasure of the scent before she shook her head to clear it, turning back to Kindle.

"I think I'll choose the one with the view of the lake.   The attic would be nice, but ...I don't have all that much with me that wouldn't be better used around the show room." She said with a bit of a nod. "If your happy with it.." She said looking away and drawing a design on the floor with her claw. "I'd totally help you move your stuff over here, unless you want to hire some big strong stallions..and we could, er, watch them work or something..." She had decided she *liked* Kindle..but now she was going to er, test the breeze...

"Yeah, harmony, that's a good way to describe it." Kindle briefly remembered hearing about the Elements of Harmony, or the ponies who wielded them anyway, living in Ponyville, and wondered whether she'd seen any of them around town. She shook her head, focusing on the griffon in the show room again. "I'm glad you like them!" Kindle said, happy with Kit's response to the candle scents. "I'll start working on making the actual candles as soon as I can."

"Sure, I'll take the room with the attic. If I'm moving my workshop here, I'll have candle-making supplies and tools to store there. Lakeview's all yours." To tell the truth, Kindle was rather relieved that she wouldn't have a view of the lake. She had a fear of drowning, and a mild fear of large bodies of water, that she knew was irrational, but couldn't shake anyway. Working in a building nearby a lake would help that, she hoped, but she was glad that she wouldn't have to stare at the water all day.

"Oh, if I clear out my cart, I can have most of my stuff over here in a jiffy," Kindle said, oblivious to the meaning behind Kit's suggestion. "Although there's a work table that would probably be easier for someone with wings to make across town."

Kit stretched out on the counter again, peering over at Kindle curiously, head tilted to the side. "I do like them." She reiterated with a small chirp, catching some of Kindle's Excitement, before she rolled over onto her back,  and turne dher head at Kindle. Such an adorable gryphon with her back paws and foreclaws curled up against her body, tail  up in the air.

"Oooh, I suppose I could take the work table, but look how adorable I am, are you going to make something as adorable as I am work?"
