NN: Something Sweet to Bite
« on: October 25, 2014, 12:20:16 am »
Lamplight steps out the door of the Guiding Light, taking a deep breath of the crisp evening air. The night was only just beginning, and already she could detect the delicious scent of a variety of baked goods being set out by vendors, the perfect snack for the crowds of ponies who would be out celebrating. A wide smile curls the orange mare's lips. Nightmare Night! When ponies of all ages dress up and go out into the night to party or in search of candy treats. She's no different, of course, dressed in a long black coat and wide brimmed hat. A goggled, beaked mask would complete the look, once she puts it on. For now though, it just hangs at her neck. She glances back at the inn for a moment. It was closed for now, but later in the night she'll be hosting a party. But first she wants to go out and have some fun, take part in whatever games there may be, maybe enter a costume contest. She doubts she'll win anything, even now she can see some ponies with more impressive costumes than her own. It'd still be fun though. Turning her back on the tavern, she pulls the mask up to her face and sets off into the night with a spring in her step.

"Trick or treeeeeeat~!" a group of early going colts and fillies sing songed another house as their hunt for candy was being kicked off to a strong start, the mare they'd half asked half threatened with the promise of tricks chuckling and using her magic to float over a hoofful of candy to distribute amongst the young ponies. A little mummy got himself a few pieces of bubble gum, a mad scientist got a couple fun sized candy bars, a lazier colt dressed as a "good student" carrying just a backpack as a costume got a small mint chocolate coin, so on and so forth. All the while the mare had short little exchanges between the youngins about their costumes, how well their nights had gone so far and what they were hoping to accomplish before the night was out, some hoping to amass a years worth of candy others talking about keeping an eye out for the Princess of the Night and others still almost letting slip plans to cause al kinds of chaos once they had been fueled with enough sugar. All went smoothly up till the last pony had stepped up to receive his fair share of the goods, the colt having been lingering a bit behind as he hadn't actually been a part of the click that was patrolling and instead was just sort of tagging along to skim some candy without having to knock on the door by himself.

His costume was an odd combo of cheap and clear effort being made. The body of the young pony was covered by a mere sheet with a few holes cut out here and there, the most bare bones attempt anypony could make towards a ghost costume if that was their intention, but his face was actually spooky mostly due to the mask he wore. It was just a simple piece of canvas cut out then stuck to a piece of board - most likely cardboard - then tied around his head with a piece of string. Again, really simple, but it was the artwork that was selling it, a legitimately spooky, in a fun way, face of a ghoul lookin creature in mid moan, special detail taken for the small things to add to the spook factor. It was better artwork for a mask than anypony could really find in the average costume shop, but the rest of the costume screamed having either forgotten about the rest of the costume or merely run out of time before he could finish it.

His bag, unlike the other ponies before him, had a heavier item thud into his bag that hit with almost enough weight to pull the pillow case he was using out of his hooves and fall to the ground. After a quick clarification over how he had made the mask himself, the mare gave him and the rest of the group a wish for a fun evening before returning back inside and leaving the foals to celebrate their newly gotten goods. Needless to say, the masked pony was a bit confused about what he'd been given, him trotting a short distance away and rummaging through his bag while the other kids left to continue on with their candy hunt. It didn't take him long to find, his bag still being pretty empty this early on, and in moments he was holding up a gray object in his hoof, nhis other hoof being used to pull up his mask so he could see better, a tan muzzle poking out of a larger hole cut into the sheet for candy tasting purposes while two brown eyes peeked out from smaller holes cut just above the larger one.

"... I got a rock?" the colt wondered aloud, a sudden surge of confusion mingled with theories galloping through his mind as he tried to make sense of this. No. He couldn't have literally just been given a rock in place of candy after seeing other ponies get away with chocolate and bubble gum. A few seconds were spent examining the rock, it being turned over and over in his hooves as he hummed and narrowed his eyes at the strange acquisition.

... Maybe it had been a mistake? Or some kind of joke he wasn't catching on to? Should he go back and ask? Nah, he'd look silly going back to the house to question that durn adult about this wrench she'd thrown into the workings of his young mind. Had he been a more mischievous pony, surely the colt would have begun to consider the idea of egging a house or two as revenge for this transgression.

Then he got an idea. An idea that he would have neeeeeeeever acted on had he actually been out with a group of friends or others that could have seen and teased him over it. Slowly, carefully, and eventually hesitantly, the young pony started to stick his tongue out and bring the rock closer to his mouth, his face slowly twisting up in anticipation for the possibility of grussness coming right for his taste buds as it inched closer. And then his tongue met the rock and...!

It tasted sweet. Like candy. It took a couple seconds for it to click, his tongue taking an experimental lick of the rock before retracting back into his mouth to savor the taste better. A rock that tasted lik-ooooooooooooooooooh!

Oooooooooooooh!

Rock candy.

Hilarious.

Resin felt silly as he dropped the rock back into his bag and surveyed his surroundings, keeping an eye out for any other groups of kids going from door to door that he could mix in with. Gosh darn it. Not having any friends yet in town really was making this Nightmare Night tricky when it came to avoiding embarrassment. Would just be awkward to go up to doors by himself, no matter how nice the ponies in this town were, and sure he was recognizing colts and fillys from his class beneath the costumes and make up every now and then, but he still wasn't sure if he knew any of them well enough to ask if he could hang out with them for candy gathering good times.

Hmm... Maybe he should just go back to the shop and suffer through his parent's boring adult party that would be going on soon... Least he was sure they would have cake, but that would be so laaaaaaame...

No! He would at least fill up his pillow case with a respectable amount of candy first! No matter how tricky it would be! And afterwards he would go to the main festivities in town once all the games and junk started!

Determined, Resin used one of his hooves to flip his mask back down into its place before hefting his light and barely filled bag up and over his shoulder so he could trot onwards.

Carri, whom flies over the streets of Ponyville, is dressed as a storm cloud... using an actual storm cloud. Her head, hooves, wings, and tail stick out from the cloud and she holds below herself a six-foot pole which strands of lightning run down and into Brash's costume.

Brash is dressed as the classic Frakenpony with a mechanical twist. Wearing bronze bolted armor with two much larger bolts at her neck guard. Her head an tail being the only unarmored parts of her, she has makeup of a long stretch of stitches going down the left side of her face and along the base of her right ear which has been dyed green. As lightning runs into the costume it exudes steam from its joints.

The armor being too heavy for Brash to actually move in, a series of wheels are installed in the base of the armored hooves that allow Carri to wheel Brash around town with the pole attached at the back of the armor.

"Now let's go win a competition so these ponies will know who's superior." Brash remarks as Carri wheels her to a house.

Being too far in the air to knock and not wanting to let go of the pole Carri opts to lightly swing Brash into the door, which ends with a *bang!* The dazed Brash does her best to keep her composure as a mare answers the door dressed in a timber wolf costume.

"Trick or treat!" Carri chimes from above while Brash grunts in disapproval.

Seeming to think Brash had said the words the mare happily deposits a variety of small candies into the bucket that hangs around Brash's neck and wishes her a happy Nightmare Night before closing the door.

Carri cheerfully turns Brash around and wheels her back out into the streets as her quest for candy continues.

Dark Matter shambles out of his house, calling a cheerful goodbye to his uncle. Each lurching step he takes marks the ground for a moment, glowing the same sickly green as his eyes beneath his cowl. He was rather proud of that effect; it had taken him days to get it down to where he didn't have to concentrate on it every step he took.

He adjusts the neckline of his cloak, bewitched tonight to black with a solid golden trim. It's chilly tonight, but the heat of a crowd and friendly company will make it easy to forget it's not still summer. He makes his way towards the square where the festivities will take place; maybe the apple bobbing is already set up.
All exists in darkness, save light; how can you call light more wondrous?

Ryo closed the front door of her little house, that was decorated in a quite spooky manner, but also quite clearly with secondhand stuff bought from somepony's yard sale. She thought it looked good though. There was a sign, that had few fake spiders hanging from it that read "STAY AWAY!" with red, fake blood. Ryo was hoping that that would keep the trick-or-treaters away, as there was obviously not gonna be anypony home tonight. Ryo's costume was, however more impressive than her house decorations. She had spotted a pile of old comics about Supermare on the same yard sale she found the decorations from, and after deciding to buy them and give them a try, she had really enjoyed the comics. This was visible from her costume, that almost perfectly resembled the outfit Supermare wears in the comics. A white, spandex bodysuit, golden shoulder pad with red cape, tool belt with replica gadgets, and blue boots. The only thing missing was the iconic mask, as she had not been able to find one, and didn't have time to make one. This has lead her to remove the big golden "S" on the front of the suit, and replace it with a glowing light blue "R".

Ryo headed towards the town hall, hoping that she would get some kind of instructions for the night from there. Like where all the attractions were, and where she could attend the costume competition, though that one was still undecided on. After getting there, and after asking around a bit, Ryo headed towards the main stage of the event, where all the games and attractions were scattered around to.

"Nightmare Night! What a fright! Give us something sweet to bite!"

Ah... Excellent. The first victim--er... guest has arrived. How utterly... delectable.~

Ivory slinks her way silently down the steps into her living room, slithering up to the front door to have herself a better look at her meal-- visitor... that lied in wait beyond its wooden frame. Her house was completely void of any light save for the sparse decorations that littered the adjacent yards, giving absolutely no indication that anypony, or anything for that matter, resided inside. The Noctral lets her eyes do the work, naturally; blood-red irises peek curiously, hungrily through the windowed cut-out about halfway up the door. The silvery light of the full moon would have been more than enough to distinguish the figures of the three tasty morsels-- fillies... that perched upon her doorstep. Ivory cants her head to one side to study the foals' chosen apparel for the night, her hoof poised upon the door's handle as if she ready to strike at a mere moment's notice.

No... Not yet...

The first was difficult to make out. A ghost, perhaps? Ivory's eye catches a gleam, a reflection from two, spherical objects meant to represent eyes, followed by a pair of long, crudely made antennae. A parasprite. How delightfully quaint. Ivory shifts her gaze to the second. A colt, she thinks, with makeup stains smeared all over his body and mane, now matted with a tangible greasiness. A clown, more than likely, given that his meritable attempt was obviously self-serviced and done without the aid of a mirror. The third, however, more than made up for the other two. Dressed in a white, flowing gown adorned with various faux gems of every size and color, the tiny mare shone brilliantly against the moonlight. The two small cut-outs on her side defined the filly as a Pegasus, and a cute one at that. Ivory's eyes were then drawn to the mare's face, noticing a protrusion extending from the center of her forehead: a unicorn horn deftly constructed out of acrylic and cardboard. A princess! Ivory licked her fangs... Oh, this will be fun!

Just as the three fillies turn to depart with somber expressions, convinced that nopony was home, Ivory teasingly jiggles the door handle. All three pairs of ears shoot straight up, but the first to turn around was... The princess. Perfect.

Ivory springs her trap, flinging the door open with a loud crack as it slams into the side of her house. The princess' companions scream, but Ivory wasn't done quite yet. With a bone-chilling, maniacal laugh, the Noctral steps forth into the moonlight and unfurls her wings, illuminating her grotesque, fearsome form. Her coat was dyed pitch-black, its natural reflective color fighting through the ink to give off an eerie, ominous glow. Throughout her limbs and wings, the ink became mottled in appearance, creating the illusion of what could only be perceived as see-through, gaping holes. Crimson, magically altered eyes lock squarely upon the would-be princess, hungrily swathing over her form like a delectable, bite-sized treat. Ivory's mane and tail remained virtually unchanged, albeit splayed at its ends to partially cover her own wicked, finely crafted horn: a gnarled, blackened thing that seemed to glow as eerily as she was. After a brief pause for dramatic effect, Ivory smiles, revealing a row of sharpened teeth before drawing herself menacingly close to the princess and her entourage.

Only... Her entourage was nowhere to be found. The moment Ivory stepped out from the shadow of her doorway, the other two scrambled for cover behind a nearby decoration. A large carving of a pumpkin, as it were. The princess, however, had an unexpected reaction. She stands resolute, unflinching in the terror that caused her companions to flee. The little mare tilts her head as if she was studying Ivory, gauging if the Noctral-turned-Changeling was all bark and no bite. Turns out... The princess was right.

With a smile that can melt even the darkest of hearts, the filly proclaimed, "Nightmare Night! What a fright! Give me something sweet to bite!"

It was almost too cute to bear. Especially that emphasis on me...

"Allright, allright. You win, little princess." At least Ivory's voice hasn't changed, still as soothing and melodious as ever. Ivory recants, almost disappointed she wasn't able to scare her, too. Two out of three wasn't bad, right? Ivory disappears within her doorway for a few moments, promptly returning with a generous amount of candy. By now, the princess' two friends had returned by her side, obviously ashamed they had been beaten out by a girl. Ivory couldn't help but chuckle as she passes out her trove of sweets by the hoof-full, fittingly amused by the turn of events. "Run along now! And don't let the Changelings catch you!~"

Ivory waves them off before silently closing the door behind her, now quite convinced that her costume would induce a good scare. Only one thought burns in her mind: who should be her next victim-- target... to scare? She races through different options, tapping a forehoof to her chin in thought before ultimately deciding the best thing to do is hunt-- wander... around the Town Square. With all the festivities and games corralled into one place, ponies would be ripe for the picking! With a small hum of approval, the Noctral takes to the sky and makes her way over to the gathering.

Already she spots a figure trotting down to the Square, her flowing red cape easy to spot from above. Or at least Ivory thinks the pony is a she... Upon closer inspection, Ivory notices that the mysterious pony was dressed up as the iconic comic-book superstar, Supermare. The Noctral mulls about how she should approach the mare, entertaining various scenarios in her head. Should she duck into a nearby hiding spot and jump out at her? Or perhaps just fly straight down? Ivory decidedly chooses the latter, swiftly circling around the Supermare before diving straight at her, emitting a loud hiss as she tears through the air.

Not too far ahead of the monstrous Frankenstein-stormcloud combo walks a different figure.  At first glance it definitely looks like a mare.  She's a green pegasus wearing a red floral-print blouse and a long white skirt.  Her green mane is combed back into a braid held at the base by a red flower clip, matched by one on her tail that doesn't end in a braid.  Hung around her neck and shoulder is a black purse, the only container seemingly on her person.  Her face shape and build are somewhat more...masculine than her outfit, though.  Perhaps cursed by her heritage to be one of those females more handsome than pretty, and maybe she'd had a chunk more than her fair share of sweets in her day.

She's also taller than most of the foals patrolling the neighborhoods by a wide margin, but who's counting?

As she walks up to the next door, she steps on a pressure plate near the door and with a *snickt*, a skeleton pony setup pops out of the cobwebbed bushes with a clatter of bones.  The mare gives a rather gratuitious "Kyaaaaaa!" and jumps back, hoof to her chest.  A second later the front door swings open and a large pirate steps out of the house, swinging a hoof ending in a candy cane.  A bit out of season, but hey, candy is candy.  "Yaharr, got ya good, I-  Hey," the pirate laughs before stopping and squinting menacingly at the mare.  "Where be ye costume, young lass?  Did ye ferget it be Nightmare Night tonight?"

"N-n-no, s-sir," the mare squeaks out, unveiling another tragedy.  Her voice is rather annoying and sounds like she has to force every word out with entirely too much breath.  She stops cowering and pulls the purse from around her neck, holding it out in front of her.  "N-nightmare N-n-night, what a f-f-fright, g-"

"I be givin' ye nothin' without ye bein' in costume, landlubber!"  The pirate swings his hook hoof menacingly while retreating through the door.

"B-b-but this i-is-"

"Is nothin'!  Come back when ye get in the spirit of yon holiday!"  He begins pulling the door closed with a slam, but the mare sticks her bag in the opening, holding it open with a *crunch* as its contents are crushed.

"Oh please," she continues...in a rather lower voice than before.  She...he clears his throat.  "It took forever for me to get this costume to look convincing."

The door opens again and the pirate fixes his one-eyed glare at the now-revealed-to-be male in front of him.  "That be ye costume?  Yar..."  He looks him up and down for a couple of moments before breaking out into a grin.  "Yar, I get ye now, I get ye.  'Tis a fine job ye did, too, for a landlubber!  And I, uh..."  He pokes the purse with his hook hoof.  "I suppose this be ye haul?"  Schwambart nods, looking inside.  "I be terribly sorry, matey," the pirate continues, popping off his hook into the purse and reaching into the door and pulling out another to add.  "Take two, they be small.  Sorry for crushin' ye booty."

Schwambart laughs and tosses his mane.  "Eh, no worries.  Bound to happen.  Thanks a bunch anyway.  Oh, I mean, uh," he corrects himself, switching back to his "mare" voice with a giggle.  "Thank you very much sir!"  He trots away from the house with a "girly" skip, swinging his purse to and fro as the pirate steps out and resets the skeleton trap.  His progress has been pretty slow tonight and full of incidents like that.  Maybe his costume was too convincing.  Or just too obvious.

What doesn't cross his mind is that they might be giving him a hard time because he's a bit...old for this, isn't he?

Uuuuugh! See! That's why it was so frustrating to have had so little time to work on his costume! Resin was becoming increasingly jealous of the more impressive costumes the ponies around him were wearing, many of which having been made or assembled custom. Being from the city he supposed he expected most ponies to have just picked up some costume from a store just like how he also expected most of the candy he would get to be in tiny bite sizes due to the larger number of kids begging for sweets, but while the latter being false was a nice surprise the former was making him self conscious over his own mask and sheet.

So, again, uuuuuugh!

He sighed then tried to figure who he would follow next, a pair of ponies with some kind of double team costume deal going on catching his attention. Was that a storm cloud shooting lightning at a suit of armor? Or... Wait... Armor clad monster? He couldn't quite tell from where he was, but a short sprint to get to the proper side of the street cleared it up a bit more as he lingered behind. Following two ponies probably made him look kinda silly - following any did, really - but again his old city life made the idea of knocking alone feel... just... weird. This  pair was closest to the houses he still needed to hit... most other colts and fillies were off further away... so... Follow this pair to the next house was the plan! He tried not to be obvious about it, keeping some small distance back with the plan of trotting up when they neared a door to harvest some candy from grown ups, but it wasn't like he was invisible to anypony not blind.

Brash's hairs begin to stand on end, which is most likely the static from the lightning, but she believes it's because somepony is following her. However, trying to turn to look is futile in her rigid costume as she's completely at Carri's mercy in terms of movement. Brash looks up at Carri, "You know, most of the ponies are chanting some annoying sound and you're not even doing that much, does it even matter what you say?"

"I have no idea!" Carri says happily.

"Great, let's not say anything next time, my ears need a break."

"You got it." Carri agrees as she suddenly turns towards the next house. Swooping Brash off the ground she tries once again to lightly knock on the door using Brash's head. This time Brash is ready and aims the top of her head to the door as Carri once again fails to be graceful.

Leaving a sizable crack in the door a unicorn stallion urgently answers. Noticing it's just another child out for candy he sighs in relief and levitates a few pieces towards Brash before stopping them just above her bucket, waiting for the traditional jingle. An awkward silence follows but only briefly as the stallion attempts to speak up Brash lashes out in an attempt to bite him. Startled he drops the candy and steps back.

"Book it!" Brash commands, which panics Carri into a frenzied flight away from the door as if they'd just committed a heinous crime. This causes her to not properly turn Brash around and she tips her over on her side, drags her across the dirt a short distance before the rod snaps and Carri unknowing of this continues off into the distance, leaving Brash stranded.

The stallion rolls his eyes at the scene and waits for any other children to approach.

Resin approaches the house as the owner is busy greeting the other two foals. He slowed a bit though as he neared the door, the odd silence taking place between the kids and adult making him wonder if he was missing something or if this was some form of silly prank that was lacking in any apparent punchline. Was the prank just to confuse the grown up with awkward silence? Or was this some weird small town method of trying to dead stare somepony into giving up extra goods?

Before he could further contemplate the possibilities, the foal in the armor costume suit thingie suddenly attempted to bite the pony with the candy, this only succeeding in confusing Resin even more as the other kid soon fell over and was dragged before being abandoned.

Small town ponies were weird...

Resin trotted up to the door and gave the usual "trick or treat!" to the adult while offering his pillow case to be filled, him waiting for the stalliuon to deliver sweet delicious goodness before turning around and hesitantly walking over to check on the filly stuck on her side.

"Er... Are you alright?" he asks, keeping enough distance between them to avoid any possible chance of the filly deciding to bite him as well for whatever reason.

Brash's head recedes into her armor, after a moment a loud clang is heard and the armor falls to pieces. "No." Brash answers with a calm sigh as she gets on her hooves. "If I'm not going to win any costume competition, I don't even know why I'm outside." In spite of saying this Brash's coat is dyed green and lined with drawn stitches in area's that were covered by the armor, indicating she may have had plans beyond a contest. She picks up her bucket and examines her surroundings.

Brash places the bucket's handle around her neck and turns to Resin, "Although I can't let my preparations go to waste, I'm lost as to what the appeal of this backwater town holiday is. So far I've just been hurting my head and collecting candy and now I won't even win anything." Brash takes a piece of candy from her bucket and leaves it in the pile of discarded armor.

Resin had never heard Nightmare Night be described as a backwater town holiday before. Maybe this pony just never liked it, but such an attitude made Resin think that this foal have also been in some way new to this kind of environment. Sounded like an attitude he'd more expect from a pony back in the city. Oh well.

"I'm pretty sure most ponies out here are more interested in fun than they are in winning," Resin replied, the idea that a kid couldn't see the appeal of dressing up in a fun costume and getting free candy not even being able to fully register for him, "I mean, I had barely any time to work on my costume so there's no chance I could ever win, but I was still having an... a pretty alright time." Sorta lonely, but candy was still candy.

"I mean, even the general mood of this town for Nightmare Night is better than it was back where I used to live. Even heard that the Princess shows up for the night here to hang out with everypony, though so far I dunno if that's just a rumor. What were your preparing for anyway? Pranks?"

Brash hums and rubs her chin as she mulls over Resin's words. "Nothing so elaborate." She responds, "I simply meant I went through all the trouble to obtain a proper bucket, make primary and secondary costumes for me and my friend, and made plans should we be separated."

Brash turns to head towards the next house, setting another piece of candy on the ground. "Well, if you think this ordeal is fun, I could use a pony to do that tired chant for me so I don't have to wrench the candy out of everyponys' hooves." Ready to make a trail of candy, Brash awaits to see if Resin will lead the way.

Ryo admired the costumes of ponies she passed by, some more creative than others, and some clearly more polished than others. Costumes ranged from a simple blanket with two eye holes, to princesses, firefighters and even strange looking metal pony thingy. The young pony in the costume kept shouting something about "Iron-pony", but Ryo had no idea who or what that was. After a short trot Ryo was able to see the center of the festivities, but something caught her ear. A weird, mysterious hissing noise. Being the night of spooks, and wanting to avoid being spooked, Ryo began to spin around, trying to spot the source of the hissing. It took her a moment to direct her eyes to the sky, where she spotted a figure speeding towards her.

It took Ryo a moment to realize that the figure looked like a changeling, and another moment for her hooves to agree with each others on which direction she should dive to move out from the flying pony's way, and with an audible "Eeep!", Ryo jumped to the side. Not very super hero like, but the "changeling" looked dangerous. Ryo stumbled into some nightmare night decorations during her dive, but managed to not break anything. She quickly raised the now a bit dented cardboard cut out of a werepony she crashed on, and returned to look at the "changeling", to deliver some justice to this daredevil, and hope that they were not actually a real changeling. "A-are you crazy...? That's dangerous t-to... D-dive like that towards the g-ground..." The rather sparkling nature of this "changeling" caused Ryo to raise her eyebrow, as she tried to take a bit better look on the pony. "Y-you're... Not a real c-changeling...? Are you...?"

"Er... Kay. Sounds easy enough," Resin replied, taking on the responsibility of the chant as he adjusted his mask and then pointed a hoof at the candy Brash was deliberately leaving behind, "You're leaking candy, by the way." He joked more to ask a question of why she was doing it to begin with than to actually warn about her decreasing stock of sugary treats. Another thing she had said had also brought a second question to his mind too, and he asked it as he turned to start walking towards the next house. "Where did your friend go anyway? That pegasus just seemed to dash off like she'd seen a real ghost. Seems an odd night to get spooked by something like that."
