A Slow Day
« on: January 31, 2014, 08:50:54 am »
It was a slow afternoon in Lickety's shop, an impressively well maintained and well stocked wonderland of confectionary, the large, colourful sign at the entrance, marking it as: Lickety's Split's Sweets and Treats.

Lickety was lazing behind the counter of her lolly-shop, snoring faintly. Her long, poofy, red and white mane fell over her eyes, blocking her face from view as she leaned back on her seat, leaning up against the wall behind her. She was snoring cutely, letting out tiny puffs and drawing in little gasps of air, each one pulling or pushing the tuft of hair that hung near her mouth, making it swing in the otherwise still air like a pendulum.

From somewhere behind the counter, a gramophone filled the huge, candy-filled shop with quiet music. A happy tune, and something about lollipops could be heard, but not much else, the mint-green mare having turned the volume down in order to facilitate her afternoon nap.

A small distance outside the confectionary store, amidst the bustle of the busy street, a lone blue stallion had slowly come to a halt, the sign catching the corner of his eye. 'Lickety's Sweets & Treats'. Sound Wrecker recalled all the times since first noticing the store that he'd wanted to pay a visit, and how every time he'd instead simply walked past it. As big as his sweet tooth was, it was always uncomfortable going into stores, such as this one, and browsing the shelves, when you could practically feel the shopkeeper's un-trusting eyes on you the whole time...

Luckily, as far as Sound Wrecker could see, as he took a few steps closer to look through the window, the keeper in question seemed to be sleeping. 'I have time to kill,' he thought, 'perhaps if I'm careful not to wake her, I could take my time to choose a snack for the train journey, and wake her up in order to pay?'

Deciding the plan to be a good one, Sound Wrecker made his way into Lickety's Sweets & Treats, the shelves stocked to bursting point with all sorts of delicacies Sound Wrecker was sure nopony would have ever heard of, a joyful look of wonder on his face.

As he scanned the available confectionary, Sound Wrecker's ears picked up the song playing quietly from the gramophone. He didn't notice himself humming along.

At the sound of the door being pushed open, Lickety stirred a little, turning to face the other way, still snoring sweetly, her peppermint mane blowing back and forth in the sugar-scented breeze created by her snoring.

Gradually, though, as the blue stallion walked around the otherwise empty shop, the chubby young mare behind the counter, slowly opened a single hot-pink eye, and as she trained it on the messy-maned young stallion who wandered her shop, a smile slowly appeared on her face, although she didn't give any other indication that she was awake, wondering what her visitor was up to, and why he seemed to be moving quietly deliberately.

Sound Wrecker took his time to pick from the figuratively infinite selection, whilst keeping one eye on a nearby clock. His train had been cancelled, and the next one due was in an hour. He wanted to be at the station ten minutes prior to that. No rush, but that didn't mean he should spend fifty minutes in a candy store just to kill the time...

Eventually deciding on a small selection of various confectioneries, he made his way to the counter, where the shopkeeper still appeared to be sleeping. Now, all he had to do... was just... wake her up, pay and leave...

Yup...

Wake up the sleeping shopkeeper... Who might be pretty cheesed off at being woken up...

Well, that wasn't going to happen. Nothing else for it. Taking a deep breath, he slowly reached out, in attempts to gently brush the mare's red-and-white mane. The new plan was to trigger some form of instinct reaction, similar to scratching an itch or swatting a fly, to give the illusion that she woke up of her own accord...

As Lickety watched the blue stallion finish gathering up the sweets he was going to purchase, and then approach the counter as if to wake her, she had to stifle a tiny giggle, but kept her eyes closed, deciding that she felt like pranking her visitor. Sure, it was a little mean, but she'd be sure to make it up to him afterwards.

The moment Wrecker leaned in to brush her peppermint mane, Lickety lunged forwards from her spot, placing herself eye to eye with the young blue stallion, and, grinning gleefully, shouted: "SUPRISE!!" at the top of her lungs, her bright pink eyes twinkling with good, albeit childish, humour.

In a split-second of blind panic, as the mare jumped out and yelled straight into his face, Sound Wrecker took a giant leap backward, letting out a strange almost-yelping sound, and he slumped to the floor, visibly shaking in fear, his hooves over his eyes. Most of his selected candies, previously placed in neat lines by the cash register, had now scattered miscellaneously across the counter.

Sometimes, Sound Wrecker did not understand other ponies's senses of humour... This mare had a huge smile on her face after pulling that stunt. That was not in the slightest bit funny.

Watching the young stallion's terrified reaction, Lickety paused, tilting her head to one side, as her smile shifted quickly to a confused frown.

After watching the poor stallion shiver for a little bit on the floor, the chubby peppermint-maned mare leapt over her counter in a display of surprising agility, leaning down to poke the blue stallion curiously, whilst her horn glowed a bright pink, and began to sweep the lollies on the counter into a paper bag, which then floated into her hooves.

"You okay, Mister? Didn't mean to scare you so bad.. I just saw you sneaking around, and thought it'd be funny.. Or, didn't really think, to be honest.." Lickety inquired, voice quiet and apologetic, as she poked his hoof again, trying to get him to lift his hooves away from his face so she could see if he was okay.

Slowly, a hoof lifted from the face of the still-trembling young stallion, and a single, Kelly-green eye came into view. The pupil made rapid, twitching movements, as Sound looked around the room, from the counter, to the mare, to the clock on the wall, to the paper bag of the sweets that had been cleared up.

Clambering to his feet, he remained silent for some time. He didn't know what was supposed to happen from here. Frankly, he was prepared for her to jump out at him again. Eventually, however, he decided to respond to the mare's initial question to his well-being.

"...Wh-...Y-Yeah... I'm o-okay... Y-You just... s-scared the living heck... o-out of m-me... just th-then..." His eyes were fixed to the floor to the immediate left of whom he spoke with.

Lickety frowned a little at his response, although she Was glad he was unharmed. As he spoke, her mouth (normally more suited to wide smiles) curled into a small frown of apology and embarrassment.
"Once again, really sorry about that, Mister. I wouldn't have done it if I'd known it would upset you so bad.." The pale green mare offered, as she levitated the bag of sweets into the poor young stallion's hooves, making it clear she was offering them in apology.

Sound's eyes picked up from the floor, as he caught sight of the bag of confectioneries. The shopkeeper seemed genuine enough in her apology. Heck, it wasn't uncommon for more lively ponies to play light-hearted tricks like that on him without knowing how differently than others he'd react.

His eyes still fixed to the sweets, he attempted to put the mare's mind at ease, answering quicker than before. "...I-It's fine... I-I'm okay, r-really..." It occured to him why she might be showing concern, and he added, "...I-I always t-talk... l-like this, it's just a-a... s-silly little vocal t-tic..." It didn't concern her that said tic was induced by nerves. She'd think he was lying, and Sound Wrecker didn't want to leave Canterlot with the possibility that somepony thought she really messed him up.

Changing the subject back to the mare's business, he brought attention back to the bag in his hooves. "...S-So, uhh... h-how much for th-the... f-for all this...?"

As Lickety watched the young stallion's gaze shift from the floor to the bag of confectionary at his hooves, and then heard his mildly reassuring words, her frown was replaced by a tiny smile, glad that she hadn't severely hurt this poor stallion with her stupid joke, as she shifted a little closer, bright pink eyes friendly, and apologetic.

"Oh.. Okay. Sorry for scaring you anyways, was really silly of me.." The chubby mare replied, apologetically, one hoof scraping the ground apologetically, before his question caused her smile to widen just a little.

"For those? Hmm.. no charge. Think of it as an apology gift, Mister..?" Lickety commented, after a moment of thought, gesturing with a hoof towards the bag of lollies that he held, before smiling a little more widely, and extending the soft green hoof to him in greeting. She was clearly happy to meet somepony new, even if it wasn't under the best of circumstances.

Sound's head, still slightly craned downward, raised a little at the mention of 'no charge'. This kind mare didn't have to do that, just because she shook him up a little. But rather than seem rude and pay all the same, Sound Wrecker remained quiet.

Upon noticing that this mare had moved slightly closer to him, he himself slowly shifted backward, deciding where she was was close enough. At the offer of her hoof, he took it in his with a hesitant shake, and introduced himself. "...U-Uhh- I-I... I-It's S-Sound... Sound W-Wrecker... a-and I presume th-that you are M-Miss 'Lickety'...?" Quickly taking his hoof back from the presumed Miss Split, he pointed to a second 'Lickety's Sweets & Treats' sign hanging above the counter, where she had been sleeping at the time of Sound's arrival.

Noting Sound Wrecker's retreat as she advanced, Lickety looked a little puzzled, but didn't comment, only taking his hoof and shaking it vigorously, a wide grin on her face as she released him and nodded happily.

"Yep! That's me: Lickety Split, owner of Lickety Split's Sweet and Treats! Nice to meet you, Sound!" Lickety replied, pirouetting on the spot with hooves wide, as if to encompass all of the shop that surrounded them, and demonstrate her ownership.

Giggling a little after the quick spin that left her just a tad dizzy, Lickety smiled at the blue stallion, and spoke, tilting her head in curiosity.
"So... Anything else I can do for you, Sound Wrecker?" She queried, smiling curiously, eager to see if the stallion wanted to chat, or had places to be.

Sound Wrecker's head tilted to the side to mirror Lickety's, almost as an act of mimicry. It wasn't uncommon for him to copy the movements of whomever he spoke with. Miss Split was quite the... enthusiastic pony. Energetic, too. Jumping from the counter earlier, nearly tearing his front leg off in that hoofshake, and then twirling around on the spot and tumbling to the floor in a dizzy giggling fit. Sound couldn't help but smirk, thinking perhaps she'd been helping herself to too much candy. But then, if you worked in a place like this, it would just be a crime not to.

"...U-Uhm... W-Well, I can't think of a-anything else... I s-suppose I should... g-go wait for my t-train now... It should b-be at the s-station in the n-next..." A quick glance back to the clock, "...F-Forty m-m-minutes...? Aww..." Maybe he could do another lap or two of the town square. Sound didn't feel right killing the time by hanging around in a shop, especially after he'd already made a purchase.

Noticing Sound Wrecker mimic the tilting of her head, Lickety giggled a little, tilting her head over to the other side as if to make sure he was definitely mimicking her movements, and it hadn't been an accident, whether or not it was a conscious action.

"Aww.. Forty minutes? Now that's no fun at all.. " Lickety replied, frowning a little, clearly upset by the thought of anyone left alone and bored at a train station, for a whole forty minutes.

"Hmm.. How about we just talk for a bit, see if we can't make time fly just a little faster?" Lickety asked, smiling warmly at her customer, as she moved to lean casually against a nearby gumball machine, which, after a moment's thought, she quickly purchased a gumball from, and began to chew while she waited for his response.
"Ooh! Sounds tasty!"
